BATHING place and port, in the parisii of its port render probable another considerable extension
name, pleasantly situated on the western shore of
Ayrshire, on ao accessible point of the coast, and only
a mile west of Saltcoats, which occupies another pro-
montory : it is 74 miles s. w. of Edinburgh, 30 s. w. of
Glasgow, 25 s. s. w. ot Paisley, and 8 N. by w. of Irvine.
The town is built upon a plan of regularity and taste;
the houses all of stone and of commanding altitude,
at no disiant date. The tide harbour will contain from
fifty to sixty vessels. The dock occupies an extent of
seven Scots' acres, and will admit fifty vessels of from

The town is chieflv indebted for its existence to the
noble family of Bglintoii, who had formerly a castle
of great strength and extent in the vicinity, but which
is now a ruin, the earl having a mansion in the town.
There are a large 11 tun her of villas, many of which
exhibit considerable taste in design ; and the town is
gradually extending in all directions. A large and
elegant Viotel, with a suite of warm and cold baths,
was erected by the late L"id Egliuton, at an expense
of £10,000. The public rooms, the bed rooms, offices
and stabling ate most commodious. There are three
banking establishments — that of the Bank of Scotland
is a commanding building adjoining the hotel. The
Koyal Hank Building is near to the railway station
and is also a fine building, and the City of Glasgow

also two fine new churches recently built, in connection
with the United Presbyterian ai.d Free Churches. Iu
the neighbourhood is a chalybeate spring, whose med-
icinal properties are beneficial in cases of debility,
scrofula, &c. The picturesque ruins of Ardrossan
Castle stand on an eminence overlooking the town
There is also upon an adjoining eminence a handsom
monument, erected to a deceased philanthropic
gentleman, who, during the latter yeais of his life,
interested himself deeply in the various institutions
connected with the town. An agricultural society ha-
