/RUMLITHIE is a village in the parish of Glenbervie, 18 miles
N. from Montrose, 7 n. by w. from Bervie, and about Gy^ b. by w.
Irom Stonehaven; situated nearly in the centre of the east side
of the county, on the road from the last-named town to Laurence-
kirk, and it is a station on the Scottish North-Eastern Railway.
The village is an assemblage of ill-built houses, so perploxingly
arranged as to constitute a bewildering lab^Tinth. Tlie parish of
Glenbervie extends upwards of six miles in length, by a breadth
of three in some parts, and five at others; bounded on the w. by
the Water of Bervie and Fordoun, on the e. by Dunnottar and
Fetteresso, on the s. and s.e. by Arbuthnott, and ou the n. by the
hills of Strachan and Durris. The soil in the upper part of the

eight morning and a quarter-past three afternoon, and are despatched at a quarter-past eleven morning and five minutes before
six evening. The nearest Money Order and Telegraph Office is at Fosdoun.
district is of a bluish clay, in the lower of a dry fertile loam. The
northern part of the parish lies partly among the Grampian Hills.
The river Bervie bounds the district partly on the west,
and the Carron has its source within it. The hamlet of Glenber-
vie, which stands in the vicinity of the former river, is a barony ol
the Douglas family. A Free church and an Episcopal chapel aro
in Drumlithie,, and a church of the Establishment at Glenbervie.
A fair is held on the first Thursday after the second Tuesday in
October. The parish of Glenbervie contains 15,041 statute acres,
and by the returns for 1871, had a population numbering 1,07S;
of this number, 806 were returned for Drumlithie.
