FORFARSHIRE.
SLATER'S
INYEKKEILOR,
WITH THE PARISH AND VILLAGES OF LUNAN, ETHIEHAVEN, LEYSMILL, AND OHAPELTON.
XNYEREEILOR parish presents a front of five miles to the sea at
Lunan Bay, near which, on au eminence at the mouth of the Lunan
river, stands an old venerable ruin, called " Red Castle," which is
said to have been built by William the Lion, and used by him as a
hunting seat; the parish is ol au oblong form, extending west
about seven miles, and four and a half at its greatest breadth. Tho
parish church stands inland, on the Lunan water, at the distance of ;
fivo aud three-tiuarter milea from Arbroath, its post town, and seven ;
from Jlontrose. The Keilor rivulet ruus through the parish to the \
sea ; and the small flahiug village of Ethieitaven is situated at the i
mouth of that river. Lky^mill and Ohapelton are also small I
villages in the parish; Chance Inn is also a place in this parish. ,
There are an Established church aud a Free church, the latter /
erected in the year 1S43. It likewise contains several schools, in I
which are taught the ordinary branches of education. There are f
in the parish several fiue seats, particularly Ethie House, the seat
of the Earl of Northesk, about a mile from which, eastward, near/
the sea, stand tho rnmains of St. Murdoch's chapel, at one time a \
cell of Aherhrothock , and a ahort way to the south is the promon-
tory of Redhead. The ridge of the coast at this point is very rooky
an(l precipitous, about 2(JiJ feet above sea level, and continues gra-
dually rising iu a southerly dicection fox four miles to Dickmount-
law Hill iu the adloiuiug pariah of St. Vigeans. This parish, which
comprises 10,240 acres, in 1871 had a population of 1,521.
Lt'NAN is a small pai^ish situated about seven miles from Ar-
broath, its post town, and fpiu fTQsa Alontrose, two miles in length
by two ia breadth, embracing 1,910 acres, bounded on the east hy
the Gferman Ocean, on th^ ^outh hy the Lupan water, which
divides the parish from Inverkeilor, on the west by Kinnell, and on
tho north by Vlaryton aud Ccaig. The bay is one of the finest and
most roniantic in Scotland, forming a segment of about tivemileg
at each extremity, of which there is about a i^iile of bold, rugged,
aud perpendicular roykg, riaiug oacasioually in pyramid-shaped
columns of 100 or 150 feet high. The parish ch\^rch is situated ^t
the south-east extremity of the parish. Lunan parish in 1871 con-
tained a population of 248.
