DIREOTORY.
FOCHABERS.
ELGINSHIRE
origiual gems of iirt. At the eastern end of tlio town stands an
elegant building in tlie Elizabethan style of arcliitccture — this is a
free school founded byAlexaucler Milues.Esq., a native of Fochabers.
By his will, dated New Orleans, 17th of October, 1S3G, he bequeathed
to the parishes of Bellie and Ordlish the sum of lUU.OOO dollars for
establishing a free school. The cost of erecting the building
amounted to i;4,a38, out of a fund of £16,415 — £15,0130 being invested
in heritable security, yielding an annual income of ^GSO, by means
of which 500 children are educated.
The parish of Bellie, of which Fochabers is the kirk town, is
partly in this county and partly in BanlTshire. It is 6 miles in length
by 4 in breadth, bounded by the sea on the north, and on the south-
east by ri,uthven and Boharm. The county of Moray comes here,
east of the Spey to a small extent, and on this piece of ground, which
is in the parish of Bellie, stands the town of Fochabers. When
William, Duke of Cumberland, was on his march to engage Prince
Charles at CuUoden, ho slept a night in the manse of Bellie.
Fairs are held at Foonabers on the third Thursdays in January and
Februax'y, fourth Wednesday in Mai'ch, fourth Thm'sday in April,
fourth Thursday in May, first Thm'sday in July, second Wednesday
ill August, and first Thursdays in October and December. The
entire parish of Bellie contained in 1871 a population of 2 317
j Urquhart is a parish extending from tho river Spoy to the river
I Lossie, a distance of about six miles, tlio breadth being about five
; miles. The village of Urquhart is very small, and about one and a
ihalf miles from Lhanbryd, which is the nearest railway station
j The population of Urquhart parish in 1871 was 2,3(38.
i Garjiouth and Kingston are small villages in the quoad sacra
I parish of Speyinonth, but locally in the civil parish of Urquhart
! with wliich parish the population is returned ; they are situated
between four and five miles n.w. of Fochabers— the former situated
( at the month of the Spey, on its left bank. Tho principal trade is
j ship building, and the exportation of corn, coal, timber, and salmon
i —of the latter considerable quantities aro sent, principallv to
I Loudon and other southern markets. The imports are guano
j bone manure, timber, and coal. The port formerly had a good*
harbour, formed by tho mouth of the Spey, and here a number of
vessels have been built entirely of native wood. A fair is held on
I tho 30th of June (new stj'le).
