LIRKINTILLOCH (formerly EirJdniulloch) is an ancient and
thriving manufacturing town, burgh of barony, and capital of the
parish of its name, 40 miles w. from Edinburgh, 20 s.s.w. from
Stirhng, 16 e. from Dumbarton, the like distance w. from Falkirk,
7 N. fi'om Gliisj^ow, the like distance w. from Cumbernauld. 5 s.w.
from Kilsytb, 3 s.e. from Campsie, and 5 from Campsie Glen. It
is situated on the -n-ater of Ly£giai.jix>ar to its junction with the
Kelvin ; and is understood to derive its name from the locality,
the original designation being CairpeniuUoch, signifyinR in Cambro-
British the fort on the head or end of the hill, which is deBeariptiva
I of the site of the town, standing as it does on the verge of a ridge,
advancing from the south into a plain on the banks of the Kelvin.
j The wall of Antonius passed through this town, and one of h'S
[principal forts stood ou the summit of a hill, a little south-west
■ of the pariih church ; the site of a fortress is even to this day
; recognised by a deep moat called "Peel." KirkintiUoch (which is
; the largest parish in the shire) and the neighbcuring parish nf
i Cumbernauld are separate i fj-om the rest of the county bythe north
point of Lanarkshire, and are surrounded by that comity and
