TO THE PUBLIC OF DUNDEE;
It is now upwards of six months since I resolved to publish a
Dundee Directory, and began to make the necessary arrange-
ments for that purpose. The vahie of such a publication depending,
of course, on the extent and accuracy of the local information which
it might furnish, — my chief object therefore was, to procure correct
lists of the principal Inhabitants, and of the Magistrates, Banking
and Trading Companies. But owing, in part, to the time unavoidably
employed in collecting these Lists, and, in part, also to the changes
which annually occur amongst the Members of the Town Council
and the representatives of other public bodies, I intended to delay
putting the whole of the Directory to Press till a period subsequent
to October next ; circumstances however, which it is not worth while
to detail here, have induced me to alter that resolution, and I now lay
the work before the Public, trusting that it may be found tolerably
correct, and usefiil to the trading part of the community, as well
-as to strangers.
I am aware, however, that notwithstanding the labour and atten-
tion which have been bestowed on the preparation and adjustment of
the different Lists, errors and omissions in them will be found. Per-
fect accuracy in such productions is unattainable, and it is vain to pre-
tend to it, more especially in the absence of those facilities for collect-
ing information on every point, which the publishers of the Edin-
burgh and Glasgow Directories enjoy ; yet in justice to myself I may
state, that every precaution lias been taken with the view of render*
ing the Directory complete. The proof sheets have been revised by
several Gentlemen, who, from their official situations, have a veiy
general knowledge of every thing connected with Dundee, and were
consequently well qualified to suggest such corrections and additions
