[Stevenston village— distant 17 J miles from Ayr ; 12| miles from Kilmarnock.]
Steven STON lies 5| miles from Irvine. Population — In 1831,
3544; 1841, 3791; 1841, 3810. Increase since 1831, 266.
Extent — It contains about 6|^ square miles, or 3182 Scotch
acres. Its length is about 5 miles, and its breadth 3 miles.
Boundaries — It is bounded on the north by Ardrossan and Kil-
winning ; on the south by the Firth of Clyde ; on the west by
Ardrossan ; on the east by Kilwinning, and by the River Gar-
nock, which separates it from Irvine ; on the south-east by the
confluence of the Irvine and the Garnock, which divides it from
Dundonald. Character — The population are engaged in mining,
shipping, ship-building, and hand-loom weaving. Fishing is
carried on to a small extent at Saltcoats, which is the seat of
considerable business. Markets, Sfc. — A fair is held in Steven-
ston on October 30th, St. Monoch's or St. Monk's day. A fair
is held in Saltcoats on the last Thursday of May, where High-
land servants are hired. It is also a market for small Highland
cows, &c.
