Mauchline is situated on the river Ayr, and lies 5 miles to
the E.S.E. of Tarbolton, and 4 miles from Sorn. Population — -In
1831,2232; 1841,2156; 1851, 2471. Increase since 1831,
239. Extent — The parish comprises 24 square miles, is 8
miles in extent, and from 2 to 4 in breadth. Boundaries — It
is bounded on the north by Craigie and Galston ; on the east
by Sorn ; on the south by Auchinleck and Ochiltree ; and on
the west by Stair and Tarbolton. Character — Nearly the
whole parish is arable, and the population is chiefly agricultural.
There are three box-manufactories in Mauchline Village, and a
woollen mill at the clachan of Haugh. Mauchline serves as
the capital, so to speak, of a large rural district ; hence much
business is done in the place. Markets, ^c — There are seven
fairs in the town, chiefly for the sale of cattle.
