Turnpike Roads. — In the year ending on the 31st December,
1847, the number of trusts was 223. The expense of collect-
ing the tolls was £3,033 ; the net amount of the tolls, £263,204 ;
the receipts from other sources, £28,163. The expenditure on
new roads and improvements was £21,380 ; on repairing roads,
£142,114 ; on sites for toll-houses, gardens, &c., £361 ; on
erecting toll-houses, gates, &c., £2,381 ; on advertising and
letting tolls, £2,037 ; on obtaining Acts of Parliament, £2,205 ;
on law expenses, £3,155; on salaries of surveyors, £10,154;
on management, exclusive of collecting tolls and surveying,
£7,754 ; on interest of debt, £48,865 ; on paying off debt,
£35,904 ; on other charges, £12,010.
Statute-Labour Roads. — In the year 1847, the number of
statute labour districts in Scotland was 258. The number of
surveyors was 340 ; of collectors, 411 ; of acting trustees, 3,038 ;
of meetings of trustees held during the year, 502. The expense
of collection of conversion in lieu of statute labour, was £3,965 ;
the value of the labour for statute services, £1,442 ; the salaries
of the surveyors, £4,291.
The total receipts of the turnpike trusts in England and
Wales in the year 1847, amounted to £1,283,878, of which
£1,214,709 accrued from tolls ; £30,882 from statute labour
and highway rates ; £6,026 from money borrowed ; and £32,261
from other sources. The total expenditure amounted to
£1,297,461, of which £692,894 were on repairs ; £31,317 on
improvements; £87,416 on salaries ; £21,250 on law charges ;
£262,530 on interest of debt ; 149,424 on payment of bonded
debt ; and £52,630 on other payments. The bonded debt
amounted to £6,483,081 ; the unpaid interest to £1,493,734.
YEOMANRY CAVALRY.
The number of corps of Yeomanry Cavalry in Great Britain
in the year 1848-9 was 61 ; the number of troops, 251 ; of com-
missioned officers, 950 ; of other ranks, 15,358. The number
of Scotch corps is four, namely, the Ayrshire, with six troops,
28 commissioned officers, and 475 of other ranks ; the Upper
Ward of Lanark, with 4 troops, 16 commissioned officers, and
2S4 of other ranks; the East-Lothian, with 3 troops, lO com-
missioned officers, and 147 of other ranks ; and the Royal Mid-
Lothian, with 8 troops, 30 commissioned officers, and 412 of
other ranks.
