OFFICIAL INFORMATION.
CALEDONIAN CANAL— (Opened in 1822.)
From one end of the Canal to the other the distance ia
sixty miles. The lochs along the route extend to thirty-
eight miles, and the Canal cuttings to twenty-two miles.
There are twenty-nine locks on the line — the rise to the
summit level in Loch-Oich being about 100 feet above
high water at ordinary neap tides. The Canal cat
accommodate vessels not exceeding in demensions, over
all, viz. : — Length, 160 feet; width, 38 feet; draught of
water when at the standard level, 15 feet, and vessels
drawing 18 feet water can be admitted into the Muirtown
Basin, Inverness.
