CROMARTY
_S a burgh of barony, and the capital of the parisli
and county of its name; 195 n\\\es n.e. of Inverness,
17 N.w. of Nairn, 11 s. of Tain, 8 N. by e. of Fortrose,
and the like distance w. by n. of Invergorden ; situate
upon a promontory jutting into the neck of the sea
connecting the Moray with the Cromarty firth, and at
a short distance from the entrance into a harbour es-
teemed one of the safest and most capacious in North
Britain ; in this haven vessels of five hundred tons may
ride in perfect security. The entrance from the sea lies
between two wooded headlands, called tlie 'Sutors of
Cromarty,' which almost meet and reflect each other's
form— producing an effect, in combination with the
general scenery, eminently picturesque. The view from
the bill of Cromarty is truly delightful, and is the ad-
miration of every visiter. Beneath the south Sutor is
a profound chasm, called 'Macfarqul)ar's Bed,' and a
petrifying spring, called the * Dripping Well,' both at-
tractive natural curiosities, never overlooked by the
investigating stranger or tourist. Near the north Sutor
are seven sunken rocks, termed the 'Seven King's
Sons,' so named from the circumstance (according to
tradition) of seven individuals, who bore that relation
to royalty, having been shipwrecked upon them and
drowned in returning from i ranee. The town of Cro-
marty is one of the neatest and cleanest places of its
size in Scotland ; of late years it has leceived conside-
rable and obvious improvements, and is rapidly in-
creasing in extent, population and importance. Some
few years since a fine commodious quay was con-
structed, at the joint expense of government and the
proprietor of the Cromarty estate. The herring fishery
is prosecuted in this quarter with persevering industry
and general success : in the season of 1835, the produce
of this branch of marine pursuit amounted to 6,140
barrels, and, in 1836, to 8,200; of this last number,
4,000 were exported to foreign countiies, and the re-
mainder (with the exception of the local consumption)
to the London and various home markets. A manu-
factory of hempen cloth has been long carried on to
some extent; and a branch of the Commercial Bank
of Scotland, established here, facilitates the trading
and mercantile transactions. Cromarty was anciently
a royal burgh, but was disfranchised by an act of the
Scottish privy council, in compliance with the solici-
tations of Sir John Urqnhart, proprietor of the estate
of Cromarty; it now, however, holds the rank stated
at the commencement of this brief description, and
joins with Kirkwall, Wick, Dornoch, Tain and Ding-
wall in returning a member to parliament.
The church, an ancient building, stands at the east
end of the town ; there is also another on the south
side, in which the service is performed in Gaelic. A
fair is held on the third Tuesday of November, o. s.
