KIRKPATRICK-DURHAAl AND OLD BRIDGE OF URR.
Ki
JRKPATRICK-DURHAM is a small village in
the parish of its name, 85 miles s. s. w. of Edinburgh,
14 s.E. of New Galloway, 13 w. of Dumfries, 7 e. of Par-
ton, and 6 N. of Castle Douglas ; situate on a streamlet
that falls into the Urr. The parish, wliich is skirted by
the Urr water on its western side, derives its name
from the old church dedicated to St. Patrick, and Dur-
ham, a hamlet where it stood — the latter appellation
signifying the ' hamlet on the water.' Formt rly, a
wo'illen mill furnished employment to many inhabi-
tants of the village, but it is now undistinguished by
manufactures of any kind, and is a place of no trade
but that which belongs to a few shops for the recipro-
cal accommodation of the inhabitants. The parish,
which is between nine and ten miles in length, and
about four miles in breadth, is partly pastoral and
partly arable ; the former character prevailing in the
north, the latter in the south of the district. One
annual fair is held on the first Thursday after the 17lh
of March, old style.
Old Bridge of Urr is a small village in the parish
of Kirkpairick-Durham, two miles therefrom, seated
on the banks of Urr Water; it coniains only a few
houses, and a small dying establishment.
FOST OFFICE, Kirkpatrick-Durham, Joseph Leslie, Post Masler.—LeHeis from Dumfries
arrive every forenoon at eleven, and fiom Castle Douglas every afternoon at half-past three, and are des-
patched (by foot post) every afternoon at five.
