NEWTYLE
flS a village, in the parish of its name, situate on the
road from Dimdee to Meigle (in Perthshire), eleven
miles noith-east of the former town, and two and a
lialf north of the latter. This is an improving little
place, and promises at no very distant period to arrive
at some importance, as great advantages are antici-
pated to accrue to it from being seated on the lines ot
railway opened between Dundee and Cupar-Angus.
The neighbourhood also presents inducements to ma-
nufacturers from Dundee and other towns to establish
works in this district, land being comparatively cheap
and wages low ; the locality of Newtyle is likewise
considered most eligible as a depc>t for grain and other

agricultural produce. The inbabiiants of tlie village
are almost exclusively occupied in weaving ; the arti-
cles produced from the loom are chiefly sheetings.
The parish, which is situate in the sonth-west part of
the county, extends two miles in length by one and
three quarters in breadth, including a portion of ihe
Sidlaw hills, from which the lands decline into the rich
fiat exposure of Strathmore. Near the village ai e the
rem'ains of the castle of Hatton, built by Lawrence
Lord Oliphant, in the year 1575; and contiguous to
these ruins some vestiges are visible of the still more
ancient castle of Balcraig, concerning the erection or
founder of which even tradition is silent.
