JlS a burgh of barony and manufacturing town, 12
miles E. of Kinross, tlie like distance s. w. of Cupar,
and nine N. w. of Kirkcaldy; seated wlong the summit
of a ridge of ground rising from the Leven on the
southern and a shallow vale on the northern side, and
situate on the public road up the vale of Leven, leading
into Kinross-shire. It consists principally of one street,
running from east to west ; the steps to the upper fiats
are on the outside of some of the houses, which is a
great inconvenience to foot-passengers; manyofthem,
however, have been removed of late years. It is a very
ancient place ; of this the irregularity of the streets,
and the architecture of the houses (being built with
the gable ends to the street), are proofs fully sufiicient.
Nearly all the dwellings are provided with gardens be-
hind, and the environs display much rural beauty. At
the eastern entrance to the town is a pleasant public
* green,' of a triangular figure, ornamented by a tall
tree at each end : in former times this area was the
scene of various pastimes, and the place of annual
meeting of the pedlars or packmen of Scotland. Many
improvements have been made in the burgh within the
LESLIE
last forty years, and during that period its size has been
nearly doubled : this vast increase is attributable to the
prosperity of its manufactures, consisting of linens and
the branches connected therewitl), as fiax-spiuning,
bleaching, &c., the works employed in which are chiefly
erected on the banks of the Leven, where there are
also corn-mills. Leslie is governed by two bailies and
some councillors : the Earl of Rothes, who is superior
of the burgh, has a seat, * Leslie House,' at the eastern
end of the town ; around the mansion are some fine
pleasure-grounds and agreeeble plantations.
The church, which stands near the green, is a plain
edifice, with a spire recently erected ; there are like-
wise two secession chapels, and one for the original
seceders. In the town are a parochial, a subscription,
and an infants' school, and a subsciiption and a cir-
culating library. The inhabitants of Leslie have for
years taken pride to themselves for their upright deal-
ings — as a proof of which they adduce the fact, that
no writer (lawyer) is to be found in the town. Fairs
are held annually on the fii>t Tuesday in April (old
' style), and the Wednesday before Kinglassie fair.
POST OFFICE, Mrs. Easton, Post Mistresss.— Letters from Kirkcaldy arrive every forenoon at
eleven, and aredespatched every day at ten minutes before one.
