DUJSOON AND NEIGHBOURHOOD.
Pi
'UNOON is ageuteel and thriving little town, in
the parish of its name, on the western shore of the
frith of Clyde, and the principal place iu the extensive
district of Cowal ; 27 miles s.s.e. of Inverary, 21 s.s.E.
of Strachur, and 7 s. of Kilmun ; and by sea it is 74
miles w. of Edinburgh, 30 w. of Glasgow, 10 N. of
Rothesay, 8 w. of Greenock, and 4 w. of Gourock.
The prosperity of this place entirely arises from its
peculiarly pleasant situation, having in front the
famed frith of Clyde, always studded with numerous
sailing and steam vessels. The town extends over a
considerable space, few of the streets being as yet
complete, but those of Argyle and Hillfoot already
contain several buildings of a respectable order ; and
along the shore, for a distance of two miles in both
directions, there are several ranges of genteel looking
and well furnished houses, for the accommodation of
families who resort hither in the summer season for
sea bathing : intermixed with these are many tasteful
country houses belonging to the commercial and pro-
fessional community of Glasgow and the neighbouring
towns. This place is almost entirely of recent erec-
tion, the first house for sea bathing quarters having
been built in 1821, at wliich time there were only
three slated houses, and the population was not aliove
one hundred. The pier is a wooden structure, about
three hundred feet long and twenty broad, with a
projection, nearly at right angles with the end, ninety
feet long and twelve broad, constructed in 1835, at an
expense of jE1,500. : it is a substantial work of the
kind, and is very conducive to the convenience, as
it is to the prosperity of the town
The parish church was built in 1816, and consider-
ably enlarged in 1835, containing at present nearly
nine hundred sittings ; it is a gothic edifice, with a
square tower, and stands on an eminence iu a con-
spicuous situation. A chapel of ease to Dunoon was
erected near Toward lighthouse, seven miles south-
west, in 1836-7, by subscription ; it is a neat gothic
structure, containing two hundred sittings, and cost
£400. A secession church was erected in Argyle- st,
in 1828, containing about 300 sittings ; but in con-
sequence of the crowded state of this church in
summer, it is in contemplation to add a gallery. An
excellently conducted parochial and other schools are
in the town and neighbourhood. About two miles
north-east is Hafton-quay, a good stone structure,
with a wooden projection and slip, built in 1828.
Nearly a mile further, at the entrance of Holy Loch,
on its southern shore, is ' Hafton House,' the property
and family residence of James Hunter, Esq. of Hafton,
a fine and good looking mansion, in a pleasant situa-
tion, among thriving plantations and tastefully ar-
ranged pleasure giounds. About half a mile beyond
Hafton House is the quarantine station and lazaretto,
built in 1807, a very spacious erection, in two equal
parts, each capable of holding and exposing to the
purifyiug influence of the atmosphere one thousand
bales of cotton. In Holy Loch fifteen hundred vessels
may ride in perfect safety, whatever may be the state
of the weather. — The population of the town of
Dunoon, in 1836, was about 1,100 ; but during four
or five months in the summer season it is double that
number.
