mmnhuxctb^mxt. musselburgh, &c. gtgot ^ Qto.'a
has been established since the year 1670. These downs
hrtve likewise long been the resort, for one day in the
year, of the ' royal company of archers ;' since 1817
the Edinburgh horse-races have been run here in the
autumn, and the races of the Caledonian Hunt take
place every third year.
FiSHERROW is connected with Musselburgh by se-
veral bridges, the piincipal a handsome one of stone;
indeed both places may be considered as forming hut
one, and our description of Musselbnri?h consequently
involves, in most particulars, that of Fisherrow. The
latter has a harbour, and a branch of the custom-
house ; a large sum has of late years been expended in
improving the port, but from its situation it never can
be made capable of admitting vessels of considerable
size; Fisherrow is, however, connected with the ca-
pital by a railway. The greater portion of its population
are engaged in the fishing business, and by this pursuit
supply the Edinburgh markets. The occupation of the
women of these towns and neighbourhood should not
be left unnoticed : they are the carriers of greens, salt,
and fish, to the metropolis ; to that mart they trudge,
loaded with very heavy burdens, early in the morning.
and return by mid-day after disposing of their pro-
duce ; in this way they gain from 8d. to Is. 3d. a day.
They form a peculiar class, distinguished from the rest
of the community by their dress, habits and manners,
and partake biit little in the general improvement ; the
husbands being fishermen, or of other occupations,
they acquire a tolerable competence between them
In VERESK is a parish, including a village of the same
name, together with Fisherrow and the important town
of Musselburgh, already described. It is situate at the
norlh-eastein extremity of the county, and possesses
a soil peculiarly adapted for agricultural productions.
It has obtained the appellation of ' the Mcmtpelier of
Scotland,' from the salubrity of iis air and the beauty
of its prospects. Pinkie House, an ancient seat, erected
by the first Earl of Dunfermline, stands in this dis-
trict; it contains the great natural cusiosity of 'the
routing well,' so named from the extraordinary sounds
which are emitted from it, previous to, or during a
siorui, resembling the noise of hammers mingled with
the imitation of pattering hail. In this parish are
found limestone, freestone, and coal, the latter parti-
cularly in abundance.
