COLLINTON, SLATEFORD, CURRIE, & KIRKNEWTON.
C^OLLINTON, or CoUiiigton, is a village in the
parish of its name, the latter iyinK at Ihe b^se of the
Pmtland Hills, part of which it includes. Thetirounds
risebeauritully fmni the vale of Corstoiphine, and are
finely cultivated, inclosed and planted; tiie water of
Leith parses through them, and its banks are here ro-
mantic and wooded. The kirk and manse olCollintort,
standing in the midst of lovely .scenery, are four miles
from Edinburgh. The manufacture of paper is carried
on here, and that of snuff at Slateford, a village in
this parish ; the district abounds with limestone and
freestone. On the lands of Comiston, which lie to
ihe east, are vestiges of a very extensive encampment,
near which is a rude massive block of whinstone, called
'Camus-stone,' said to indicate the burial-place of
some Danish commander. On these lands the fountain
for the Edinburgh water cistern was liist erected.
Logan-house Hill, in this parish, is a considerable
eminence, risingupwards of fifteen hundred feet above
the level of the sea.
The paiish of Currie is bounded by Corstorphlne
and Ratho on the mntli, Collinton on the west, and
the Pentland Hills skirt it on the south. Through the
low ground runs the water of Leith, and on its north-
ern bank, six miles distant from Edinburgh, stands the
village of Currie, through whicli the road to Lanark
passes. Tlie church is erected on a very commanding
situation. The manufacture of paper and snuff pie-
vails in this parish to some extent, the former parti-
cularly. On the estate of Maleny, beyond Currie, and
rising above tl)e banks of the Leith, is Lennox Tower,
anciently the residence of the family of Lennox, as
well as the occasional one of Mary Queen of Scots.
At a short distance from it, on the opposite bank of
the river, are the ruins of another ancient edifice,
once the mansion of the Skenes, of Currie-hill. The
parish also contains the house of Baberton, which is
lemarkable as having been used as a Imnting-seat by
royalty at two distant periods : first, by Jaiiie> VI, of
Scotland, previous to his accession to the English
throne; and, secondly, by Charles X, of France, after
his expulsion from his dominions in 1830.
KiRKNEWTON, about seven miles from the capital,
is a sntall village and parish ; the latter, which in-
cludes the abrogated parochial division of CalderClere,
is bounded on the south and west by Mid-Calder, on
the east by Currie and Ratho, and on the north by
Kirkliston. In theburial-eround of the church, which
is about half a mile distant from the village, lies in-
terred the remains of the celebrated Dr. Wm. Cullen,
who was proprietor of the estate of Orniislon-hill,
where he introduced, so early as the year 1758, an im-
proved mode of culture. The river Almond, the wafer
of Leith, and tlie great Glasgow road, intersect the
parish, which abounds with excellent limestone, and
contains some fine seats and pleasure-grounds : one
of tho-e is called Meadowbank, once the residence of
a late senator of the College of Justice, entitled Lord
Meadowbank, who was one of the chief improvers in
this neighbourhood.
