ORDINAEY EATES OF POSTAGE AND
CONDITIONS OF TEANSMISSION.
(1.) Inland Letters.*
1. The rates of postage when prepaid are as
follows : —
•For a letter not above 1 oz. f - - Id.
" above 1 oz. but not above 2 oz. IJd.
" " 2 oz. " 4 oz. 2d.
" " 4 oz. " 6 oz. 2Jd.
" « 6 oz. " 8 oz. 3d.
" " 8 oz. " 10 oz. 3^d.
" " 10 oz. " 12 oz. 4d.
A letter above the weight of twelve ounces is liable
to a postage of one penny for every ounce, beginning
with the first ounce. Thus, a letter weighing be-
tween fourteen and fifteen ounces must be prepaid
Is. 3d.
2. A letter posted unpaid is chargeable on delivery
with double postage ; and a letter posted insufficiently
prepaid is chargeable with double the deficiency.
3. No letter may be above eighteen inches in length,
nine inches in width, or six inches in depth, unless it
be sent to or from one of the government ofiices.
(2.) Colonial and Foreign Letters,
1. The rates of postage on letters to the colonies
and foreign countries will be found in the Table of
Colonial and Foreign Postage.
2. To some countries prepayment of the postage
is compulsory. Where this is the case, the fact is
indicated in the Table of Colonial and Foreign
Postage by the letter " c " prefixed to the rates of
postage; prepayment being in all other cases optional.
3. To some countries the whole of the postage
cannot be prepaid ; and where this is the case, the
letter "a" is prefixed to the rates in the Table of
Colonial and Foreign Postage, to indicate that an
additional charge is levied on delivery.
4. A letter posted unpaid, or paid oi]ly in part,
directed to go by a route by which prepayment is
compulsory, is sent to the Eeturned Letter Office, to
be sent back to the writer, unless there is another
route by which prepayment is not required; in which
case the letter is sent by the latter route. Letters,
however, for Australia and New Zealand (even though
the prepayment be insufiicient), if prepaid as much as
one rate, are not detained, but are forwarded charged
with the deficient pustage and an additional rate.
5. A letter posted insufficiently prepaid for a place
to which prepayment is optional is sent forward
charged; the value of the stamps, however, being, as
a rule, taken into account.
6. The following are the charges made on delivery
at the under-mentioned places upon letters posted
unpaid (wholly or in part) : — J
* Inland letters are those which pass between places
in the United Kingdom, including the Isle of Man, the
Orkney, Shetland, Scilly, and Channel Islands.
t If the weight he exceeded to the smallest extent,
even though the balance be merely turned, the letter
becomes liable to a higher postage. The same rule applies
to letters going abroad. To provide, therefore, for errors
in scales, &c., it is well to allow a little margin, or to pay
the postage of the next greater weight.

7. The same rates are chargeable in this country
upon unpaid or insufficiently paid letters received
from the above-named places, with the exception
that letters from China are charged the prepaid rate
only.
8. No letter for any colony or foreign country
may be above two feet in length or one foot ia
width or depth.
