LANARK.— POPULATION, &c.
Lanark, or Clydesdale, extends from north to south, 52 miles; from east to west, 3-1 miles; its area is
987 square miles, or 631,719 acres. For municipal purposes it is divided into the Upper, Middle, and
Lower Wards ; and the Middle Ward, in recent years, has been subdivided into two districts. The valued
rent in 1674 was £161,239 Scots, or £13,436 sterling; the new valuation for 1870-71, inclusive of rail-
ways and canals, is £1,389,780 (viz., Upper Ward, £306,937; Middle Ward, £695,931; and Lower
Ward, £387,652). The population in 1861 was 631,566; the inhabited houses, 46,675. The parlia-
mentary constituency in 1870-71 is, Northern Division, 5873; Southern, 2933.
