| Description | Sheet 24 of the Ordnance Survey One-inch Popular Edition of Scotland, issued at a scale of 1 inch to 1 mile (1: 63,360) from a survey done in 1927. There is no date of publication on this sheet, but its Ordnance Survey Office number is 4500/30, indicating a probable publication date of 1930, although on some of these numbers the two final digits do not always match the year of publication precisely. The first Ordnance Survey of this area was done between 1874 and 1877. This sheet shows the north west part of the island of Skye, taking in the coastline from Balmeannach Bay on the east to Fiskavaig on the west, including the ports of Portree, Uig and Dunvegan, and all the hinterland. On the right, the sheet stretches from a point in the sea, 57 degrees 44 minutes north and 6 degrees 8 minutes west, east of the islet of Eilean Trodday, to Balmeannach Bay, in the south. On the left, the sheet stretches, in the north, from a point in the sea 57 degrees 44 minutes north and 6 degrees 8 minutes west, east of the islet of Eilean Troday, to a point in the sea 57 degrees 19 minutes north and 6 degrees 8 minutes west, east of Idrigill Point, in the south. There are two sets of References, the scale statement ‘One Inch to One Statute Mile - 1/63360’, with accompanying scale bar, and two further scale bars of 1 centimetre to 1000 yards and 1 centimetre to 1 kilometre. Contours and fathoms are shown, with accompanying information about measurement. |
