| Description | Sheet 65 of the Ordnance Survey One-inch Popular Edition of Scotland. It was issued in 1927 at a scale of 1 inch to 1 mile (1: 63,360) from a survey done in 1924. The first Ordnance Survey of this area was done between 1854 and 1876. This sheet shows the area north and west of the Clyde, which is a mountainous area cut through by several major lochs. In the bottom right corner, the Firth of Clyde runs west, with Greenock on the south shore, and meets Loch Long, which runs north, right to the top of the sheet, with Loch Goil coming south to join it. Further along the Firth of Clyde, Holy Loch comes south to meet it, with Dunoon further south. Further west again, Loch Striven and Loch Riddon are shown running south, although where they meet the Firth of Clyde is off the sheet. Finally, further west again, Loch Fyne also runs from the top of the sheet (north) to the bottom of the sheet (south), to a meeting with the Firth of Clyde off the sheet. Loch Eck is also shown, above Holy Loch, and Gare Loch is at the far right of the sheet, meeting the Firth of Clyde. The few roads, and the rail line snake round the shores of the Firth and the lochs, the only major settlements, apart from Greenock and Dunoon, being Garelochead, Lochgoilhead, and Lochgilphead. There are two sets of References, the scale statement ‘One Inch to One Statute Mile - 1/63360’, with accompanying scale bar, and one other scale bar of 1 centimetre to 1 kilometre. Contours and fathoms are shown, with accompanying information about measurement. The sheet would have cost 2 shillings to buy in 1927. |
