| Description | Sheet 64 of the Ordnance Survey One-inch Popular Edition of Scotland. It was issued in 1927 at a scale of 1 inch to 1 mile (1: 63,360) from a survey done in 1926. The first Ordnance Survey of this area was done between 1853 and 1864. Fifeshire was first surveyed by the Ordnance Survey during the early 1850s, and Kinross-shire was completed and issued in 1854. Surveying in Forfarshire and Perthshire went on almost simultaneously, beginning in 1857 and completed by 1862. Most of the sheet is taken up by almost the whole of Fife, with the exception of parts of the south coast, between St. Monans and Kilconquhar, and again from Kilconquhar Bay to Largo Bay, and then from Scoonie to Balgedie, all of which are not on this sheet. The Firth of Tay runs across the upper portion of the sheet, inland and westwards from the North Sea on the east, as far as Perth. Above the Firth of Tay, Dundee lies on the north bank, then further north, part of Forfarshire, and part of Perthshire to the west. On the right side, the sheet stretches from Carnoustie in the north, to a point in the North Sea slightly east of Pittenweem, in the south. On the left side, the sheet stretches from the farms of Crawbutts and Knockshinnan, just north of Stanley, in the north, to Kinross, in the south. There are two sets of References, the scale statement ‘One Inch to One Statute Mile - 1/63360’, with accompanying scale bar, and two further scale bars of 1 centimetre to 1000 yards, and 1 centimetre to 1 kilometre. Contours and fathoms are shown, with accompanying information about measurement. |
