| Description | Sheet 33 of the Ordnance Survey One-inch Popular Edition of Scotland. It was issued in 1931 at a scale of 1 inch to 1 mile (1: 63,360) from a survey done in 1928. The first Ordnance Survey of this area was done in 1876. Most of the map is taken up by sea, the channel of The Minch and the North Atlantic to the south east, south, and east, and again to the north and west, with the most southerly part of the Western Isles chain, lying across the upper left part of the map, from south west to north east – Berneray, Mingulay, Pabbay, Sandray, Vatersay, Barra, Hellisay, Fuday and Eriskay, along with many uninhabited small islands. The southernmost part of the whole of the Western Isles chain, Barra Head, lies at the southern tip of Berneray. There are two sets of References, the scale statement ‘One Inch to One Statute Mile - 1/63360’, with accompanying scale bar, and two further scale bars of 1 centimetre to 1000 yards, and 1 centimetre to 1 kilometre. Contours and fathoms are shown, with accompanying information about measurement. |

The ‘Popular’ edition was particularly intended for the inter-war generation's leisure hours – cycling, touring or walking through the countryside. |
