Commentary
This execution report begins: 'A Full, Authentic, and Particular Account of the Execution of PETER HAEMAN and FRANCOIS GAUTIEZ, who were Hanged . . . on Wednesday the 9th January, 1822, for the Piratical seizure of the Schooner Jane of Gibraltar . . . and for the Barbarous Murder of Thomas Johnson, master, and James Paterson, seaman'. Unfortunately no publication details are given. Heaman, who is reported here to be an Englishman (although other reports suggest he was Swedish), and Gautiez, a Frenchman, were convicted of piracy and murder at the High Court of Admiralty in Edinburgh. It is the only capital conviction for a crime beyond Scottish shores. They were hanged within the flood-mark on Leith Sands, opposite the Royal Naval Dockyard. The High Court of Admiralty was abolished in 1830 and its powers absorbed by the High Court of Justiciary.
