fu|iy acknowledge, that for more then eight yeers paitas you torere frefely
chofen by u^foyou have freely and cheerfully all this time taken this charge upon you of fer-
ving your G juntrey as one ot the Burgefles of this Burrough. To which place, we had the more
reatoivio make choice of you, molt of us having plentiful! experience of your fitnefle in fundrie
refpe£b, and of your hde'itie mamfefted in former Parliaments, in which we found yonr readie
wi lingneffenot onely tobea&svefor ptib ick good, but to fuffer alfo with cheerfulnede in the
publ'ck caufeof the Common-wealth. Sutldiieofus well know,and thankfully remember your
Carriage againlt the Loan money, and other projeft^. tending to publick detriment, thotfgh
much to your particular hazard in bearing witnefle againhthem. And as for this prefem Vitv
which haih paft the greateft hazards,tiials and oppolitions of any (Tor maintenance
whereof(as we of this Town have from the firlf all along to this day been ingaged with them
| again!! the common Enemy)foyou in particular havealwayescountenarxed and incouraged
ustheiein,as vvel! in your perfonall as other affistance in the fame common caufe. Asforyour^
carriage in this Tmliarnenty though we could not be fpe&ators, eye and care witne/Tes thereof,
yet we have not been wanting to be inquiiitive after the fame. The refulc of which Jhquifition
ever rend i cd you to us a diligent attendenc as of the Houfe, fo of the particular Committees,
and one that ever clofed with that party of the Houle chafe molt endeavoured Reformation of
things amife both iu Church and Coni non-wealth.
A >d as tofuch particular occafions asthi Corporation hath had in this f arlian'ent^ both for
dm Church and ourGarrifon, we thank you for It; your endeavours l\ave been molt readily ex¬
tended to the utmoft on bur behalfs. And for your carriage in the Cbuntrey at fuch times as
you have hadliberty to come amcmgft us, we thankfully acknowledgethatinordertotheweal
pub ick, both asa Jufticeof the Peace, and as a Commiffioher bf the VarHimentj you have beetl
very a£fiveindifcountenancingperfon$iii“afF.fted9or liny wayes obftrufting or impeding the
pubdek Service ofthePjr/ii/«e»t; and incouraging andadvancing the payment of taxes, and
execution of the Ordinances of the Parliament. We well remember your fei2!ng,and fending
to the Parliament the high Sheri ffe that wal of this County,and your proceedings againft other
potent E iemiesof this County. And to this day w« have obferved your adhering to the firtt
principals,as well by expreffing thelike aftivi.y fortheParliamentsoccafions Herein the Coun¬
trey, as by your Letters which fomebfus hav^ &en, as alfbby yourrefoycing at che fucceffescf
the Parliaments Afmy under his Excellercy the L6i4 E<axV/^, and your bewaiJings of the fad
condition of the Kingdom upon the Scots Invahon this Sommer; of which alfo fome of us arts
witnefTes. And furely your own advantage to your particular elfate h. th riot been an Incentive
to all this; for as for recompence from us You were nobly p^eafed to way ve it and ferve us free¬
ly : fo webclecve that yon have as freely at yoiir own charge ferved the Common-wealth ; For
we well obferve and underhand that in this timeof your long abicnce, your Ehate here is edn-
fiderably impaired, which though you lightly etteeme, being it is for the fervlce of the publick,
yet we have reafoit to acknowledge it with ihankfulneffe. Sir, We Write not thus to flatter you,
or to make way for any deligrie of putting you to any increafe offervice in GUf own particulars^
but in way of teltifying oui hearty thankfulnefle unto you, and to incourage in that further
