THE MILITARY CROSS.
(Instituted 28th December, 1914.)
Ordinances of 5th February, 1931 and 21st August, 1939.
1. Designation. — It is ordained that the Cross
shall be designated " The Military Cross."
2. Description. — It is ordained that The Military
Cross shall consist of a Cross of Silver having on
each arm the Imperial Crown, and bearing in the
centre the Royal aud Imperial Ciplier.
3. Eligibility (military forces). — It is ordained
that The Military Cross may be awarded to a
Captain, a Commissioned Officer of a lower
grade, or a Warrant Officer in any of Our
Military Forces, and that The Military Cross
shall be awarded only to Commissioned
Officers and Warrant Officers of the above
ranks for gallant and distinguished services
in action, on a recommendation to Us by
Our Principal Secretary of State for War.
Officers not above the substantive rank of
Captain who hold the acting or temporary rank
of Major, and acting or temporary Chaplains
to the Forces 3rd Class, shall also be eligible.
4. Eligibility (air forces). — It is ordained
that Officers and Warrant Officers of equivalent
ranks and grades to those above-mentioned in
any of Our Air Forces may be awarded The
Military Cross for gallant and distinguished
services in action on the ground, on a recom-
mendation to Us by Our Principal Secretary of
State for War.
5. Eligibility (foreigners). — It is ordained that
Foreign Officers of equivalent ranks and grades
to those above-mentioned who have been
associated in Operations with Our Military
Forces, or with Our Air Forces, shall be eligible
for award of The Military Cross.
6. Bars. — It is ordained that anyone who, after
having performed services for which The Military
Cross is awarded, subsequently performs an
approved act of gallantry in action which, if he
had not received the Cross, would have rendered
him eligible for it, shall be awarded a Bar to be
attached to the riband by which the Cross is
suspended, and for every additional such act an
additional Bar may be added.
7. Gratuities and â– pensions. — It is ordained that —
(1) a Warrant Officer of any of Our Military or
Air Forces who has been awarded The Military
Cross shall be paid a gratuity of £20 on promotion
to a Commission, or on transfer to Our Army or
Air Force Reserve, or on discharge without
pension ;
(2) A Warrant Officer of any of Our Military
or Air Forces who has been awarded The Military
Cross and who is discharged with a pension
shall be eligible for an additional pension of
6ii. a day If European (other than Maltese)
and 3<2. a day if non-European or Maltese,
provided that he is not already in receipt of such
additional pension ;
(3) Where a Warrant Officer who comes
under sub-paragraph (1) of this Clause is awarded
a Bar or Bars to The Military Cross each Bar
shall for the purposes of gratuity be regarded as
an original award of the' Decoration, but no
1 gratuity or further addition to pension shall be
issuable in respect of a Bar or Bars to a Warrant
Officer who comes under sub-paragraph (2) of
this clause ; and
(4) Awards of The Military Cross to officers of
an Allied or Associated Army or Air Force which
may be granted under the fifth clause of this Our
Warrant, shall not entitle the recipient to any
pension or gratuity in respect thereof.
8. Gazettement and registration. — It is ordained
that the names of those upon whom We may
be pleased to confer this Decoration shall be
published in the London Gazette, and that a
Register thereof shall be kept in the Office of
Our Principal Secretary of State for War.
9. How worn. — It is ordained that The Military
Cross shall be worn before Medals in such position
in regard to other Decorations as We may from
time to time assign to it, and shall be worn on
the left breast pendent from a riband of one
inch and three-eights in width, which shall be
in colour white with a purple stripe — watered.
10. Abbreviated title. — It is ordained that The
Military Cross shall not confer any individual
precedence, but shall entitle the recipient to
the addition after his name of the letters M.C.
11. Miniatures. — It is ordained that repro-
ductions of the Cross in miniature which may be
worn on certain occasions by those to whom the
Decoration is awarded shall be half the size of The
Military Cross and that a Sealed Pattern of the
said Miniature Cross shall be deposited and kept
in the Central Chancery of Our Orders of Knight-
hood.
12. Withdrawals and restorations. — It is or-
dained that it shall be competent for Us, Our
Heirs and Successors, by an Order under Our
Sign Manual and on the recommendation to
that effect by or through Our Principal
Secretary of State for War to cancel and annul
the award of The Military Cross to any person
together with any gratuity, or pension in lieu
thereof, appertaining thereto not already paid,
and that thereupon his name in the Register
shall be erased : but that it shall be competent
for Us, Our Heirs and Successors, to restore the
Decoration when such recommendation has been
withdrawn and with it such gratuity, or pension
in lieu thereof, as may have been forfeited.
1 3. Gazettement o/ 'withdrawals and restorations. —
It is ordained that notice of cancellation or
restoration in every case shall be published in
the London Gazette.
