Note. — The numbers in the several ranks of Engineer Commander and below may be
varied at the discretion of the Admiralty, provided (1) that the total Establishment of Engineer
Officers does not exceed 1506, and (2) that the number of Chief Artificer Engineers and Commis-
sioned Mechanicians is limited to a maximum of one-third of the total number of Chief Artificer
Engineers, Commissioned Mechanicians. Artificer Engineers, and Warrant Mechanicians combined,
(frovision 2 is modified by Order in Council of the 19th July, 1V12, which provides that 1 1
â– deserving Warrant Officers belonging to classes in which Commissioned Warrant rank is attainable
may be promoted to Commissioned Warrant rank after 15 years' service as WarranIS Officer.
