THE ALBERT MEDAL.

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CROSS.
At the Court of St. James's,
The Ibth day of June, 1901.
Present :
The KING'S Most Excellent Majesty In Council.
Whebeas there was this day read at the Board a
Memorial from the Bight Honourable the Lords
Commissioners ot the Admiralty, dated the 14th day
of June, 1901, in the words following, viz. :—
"Whereas we are of opinion that there should
exist some means of recognising Distinguished
Service before tho Enemy on the part of Warrant
Officers or Subordinate ( Officers of Your Majesty's
fleet, who by reason of not holding a Commis-
sion in the Royal Navy, are not eligible for ap-
pointment to any existing Order or Decoration :
" We beg leave to recommend that Your Majesty
will be graciously pleased by Your Order in
Council to institute a Decoration to be designated
the Conspicuous Service Cross, and to consist of
a Silver Cross, with the reverse side plain, but
having on the obverse side in the centre Your
Majesty's Imperial aud Royal Cypher, E.R.I.,
surmounted by the Imperial Crown.
"We would beg leave to recommend to Your
Majesty that this Decoration be awarded for
meritorious or distinguished services before the
Enemy performed by Warrant Officers, or Acting
Warrant Officers, or by subordinate Officers of
Your Majesty's Fleet : and thai, no person shall be
nominated thereto unless his services shall have
been marked by the especial mention of his name
in despatches by the Admiral or Senior Naval or
Military Officer Commanding tho Squadron or
detached Force.
"The award of this Decoration to carry with it
the right to have the letters C.S.C., appended to
the Officer's name.
"We would submit further that the names of
those upon whom Your Majesty maybe pleased
to confer this Decoration shall be published in
the London Gazette, and a registry thereof kept
in the Office of the Lords Commissioners of the
Admiralty."
IHis Majesty, having taken the said Memorial into
consideration, was pleased, by and with the advice
of His Privy Council, to approve of what is therein
proposed. And the Right Honourable the Lords
Commissioners of the Admiralty are to give the
necessary directions herein accordingly.

Memorial from the Right Honourable the Lords
Commissioners of the Admiralty, dated the 14th day
of October, 1914, in the words following, viz. :—
"Whereas his late Majesty King Edward VII.
was graciously pleased, by his order in Council
dated the 15th June, 1901, to institute a Decoration
designated the Conspicuous Service Cross, to be
awarded for meritorious or distinguished services
before the enemy performed by Warrant Officers,
or Acting Warrant Officers, or by Subordinate
Officers of His Majesty's Fleet ; the award of this
Decoration to carry with it the right to have the
letters C.S.C. appended to the Officer's name
"And whereas we arc of tho opinion that it
would be desirable to enable the said Cross to be
granted also to Commissioned Officers of Your
Majesty's Navy below the rank of Lieutenant-
Commander, for meritorious or distinguished
services in cases where those services may not be
considered sufficient to warrant the appointment
of such Officers to the Distinguished Service
Order, and also that the designation of the
Decoration should be modified :
"We beg leave humbly to recommend that
Your Majesty may he graciously pleased by
Your Order in Council to sanction the award of
the said Cross to Commissioned Officers below
the rank of Lieutenant-Commander in addition
to those Officers who arc already eligible under
the Order in Council above recited.
"We beg leave to recommend that the said
Cross maybe designated henceforward, in these
and all other cases, as the Distinguished Service
Cross, instead of the Conspicuous Service Cross,
and that the award of this Decoration may carry
with it the right to have the letters D.S.C.
appended to the Officer's name.
" We further beg leave to recommend that the
Cross should hear on the obverse Your Majesty's
initials in lieu of those of His late Majesty King
Edward VII."
His Majesty, having taken the said Memorial into
consideration, was pleased, by and with tho advice

Commissioners of the Admiralty are to give the
necessary directions herein accordingly.
ALMERIC FITZROY.
By Order iD Council of the 2nd March, 1916, it is
provided that Foreign Officers of an equivalent, rank
to those mentioned above who have been associated
in Naval or Military operations with H.M. Naval
Forces may be eligible for the honorary award ot the
Distinguished Service Cross.
By Order in Council of the 7th September, 1916,it is
provided that Officers of the Royal Indian Marine
shall be equally eligible with Officers of His
Majesty's Navy to receive this Decoration :
Also that, in the event of any Officer, who has
already received the Distinguished Service Cross,
again performing services before the enemy which
would have entitled him to the Cross if he had not
already received it, such further services shall be
recorded by a Bar attached to the Riband by which
the Cross is suspended and that for everv further
occasion of such services an additional Bar shall
be added.

amending and consolidating the Royal Warrants
relating to the AL3ERT MEDAL.

EDWARD THE SEVENTH, by the Grace of God,
of tho United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ire-
land, and of the British Dominions beyond the
Seas, King, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of
India, To all to whom these Presents shall come,
Greeting:
Whereas Her late Majesty Queen Victoria, being
desirous of distinguishingbysomemarkof Her Royal
Favour' the many heroic acts performed by Mariners
aDd others who endanger their own lives in saving or
endeavouring to save the lives of others from ship-
wrecks and other perils of the sea; and the many
heroic acts performed on land by those whoendanger
their own lives in saving or endeavouring to save the
lives of others from accidents in mines, on railways,
and at fires, or other peril within Her Dominions,
other than perils of the >-ea, did by Warrants under
the Royal Sign Manual, bearing date respectively the
7th March, 1866, the 12th April, 1867, and tho 30th
April, 1877, institute and create for Herself.Her Heirs,
and Successors, as a mark of Royal Approbation of
such heroic acts, new Decorations styled respectively
" The Albert Medal of the First Class" and "The
Albert Medal of the Second Class," inscribed "For
Gallantry in Saving Life at Sea," and Decorations
similarly styled but inscribed "For Gallantry in
Saving Life on Land," which Decorations Her Ma-
jesty was desirous should be highly prized and eagerly
sought after.
