UNIFORM FOR THE ROYAL NAVAL AIR SERVICE.
The following regulations have been issued as to
the Uniform of Offl .ers serving in and attached to
the Royal Naval Air Service : -
1. Subject to Paragraph 4 below. Officers of the
Royal Navy graded as Flying Officers wear
the uniform of officers of the Military tsram-h
of the Koyal Navy, but of the relative rank
which they hold in the Koyal Naval Air
Service, with the addition of an eagle on the
left sleeve above the distinction lace and on
the left shoulder strap.
2. Subject lo Paragraph 4 below, Officers of the
Royal Marines graded as Flying Officers
wear Royal Mar ne uni orm corresponding
to the rank which they hold in the Koyal
Naval Air Service, wHh the addition of an
eagle on the left breast.
3. Subject to Paragraph i below. Officers of the
* Army graded as Flying Officers in the Royal
Naval Air Service wear their Army
uniform with the addition of an eagle on tne
left breast.
4. Officers of the Royal Navy, Royal Marines or
the Army, who may hold a higher rank in
their original Service than the relntive rank
of their grade in the Koyal Naval Air
Service, continue to wear the uniform of
such higher rank (modified as above).
5. Permanent Officers of tne Royal Naval
Reserve who are graded as Flying Officers in
the Royal Naval Air Service, wear the uniform
of their rank in the Koyal Naval Reserve,
except that on the sleeves of the coat and on
the shoulder straps they wear the distinction
lace of their corresponding rank in the
Military Branch of the Koyal .Navy, ana wear
in addition an eagle on the jleft sieeve above
. the distinction lace and on the left shoulder
strap.
6. Other graded Officers of the Royal Naval Air
Service wear the uniform of their eorresp jnd-
ing rank in the Military Branch of the Koyal
Navy except that the anchor on buitons,
cap badge, epaulettes and sword belt is
replaced by an eagle, and wear in addition an
eagle on the left Bleeve above the distinction
lace and on the left shoulder strap.
7. Of other Officers who are attached to the
Royal Naval Air Service but are not graded,
the following, who are under a continuous
liability to make ascents in aircraft, namely: —
(a) Officers holding Pilots' certificates who
are employed as Acceptance Officers, and
(6) Officers employed as Observers, wear
the uniform of their rank in the Royal Navy,
Royal Naval Reserve, Royal Naval Volunteer
Reserve, Royal Marines or Army, with the
addition of an eagle on the left sleeve above
the distinction lace and on the left shoulder
strap in tue case of Naval Officers, and in
the case of R >yal Marine and Military Officers
on the left breast.
8. Probationary Flight Officers wear the uniform
of Midshipmen of the Koyal Navy,e • cept that
the white turn back, button and buttonhole
on the collar is not worn, the dirk is not
required, the anchor on buttons and cap-
badge is replaced by an eagle, and an eagle is
worn on the left sleeve.
Note.— D iringthewar Probationary Flight Officers
are required to wear No. 5 Dress " Undress " only.
9. Other non-graded Officers attached to the
Royal Naval Air Service wear ihe ordinary
uniform of their rank without the eagle.
10. In the ease of Naval Officers who are entitled
to wear the eagle, the position of the lower
eud of tin first strip of the distinction braid
for wounds is half an inch above the eagle on
the lef i sleeve.
11. During preliminary courses of instruction
while uuder training. Officers are not re-
quired to alter their uniform in any respect.
12. "the Working Dress, which consists of:—
Cap.
Undress coat.
Morning waistcoat.
Blue breeches or trousers or, in hot weather,
grey flanuel trousers.
Grey flannel shirt.
Grey flannel collar.
Black tie.
Black boots and blue puttees or gaiters, or
Held boots.
is to be worn on the following occasions
only :—
(a) When employed in an Aerodrome or Air
Station or In the vicinity thereof, and
(6) When employed in actual flying.
On all other occasions, uniform is to be woru in
accordance with the dress regulati ns as
printed in the Quarterly Navy Cist and any
special instructions isaaed for the period of
the war.
