863 "CONWAY" CADETS.— SPECIAL ENTRY OF CADETS.
REGULATIONS FOR THE ENTRY INTO THE R.N. COLLEGE
AT DARTMOUTH OF CADETS FROM TBE "CONWAY."
(c.) He must have served In the training ship
1 year and 8 months, i.e., 5 terms, there
being 3 terms a year.
(d.) He must have spent not less than one
fourth (or the equivalent of 5 months) of
his servic* in practical mechanical work
under conditions satisfactory to the
Admiralty.
(e.) Before attending the qualifying examina-
tion he must pass the medical examina-
tion for the Navy, according to the
prescribed regulations.
5. The following certificates must be forwarded at
the time the candidates are nominated—
1. Six nominations to cadetships in the Eoyal Naval
College, Dartmouth, will be granted annually to the
" Conway," training ship of the Mercantile Marine.
2. Shortly before the end of each Term, the Com-
mittee of the " Conway" may nominate two Cadets
from their training ship, lor admission to the College
as Cadets of the Royal Navy ■ subj eet to their passing
a qualifying examination and satisfying the con-
ditions specified below.
Should the Committee, in addition to the autho-
rised number of nominations, wish to recommend
any specially desirable candidate, his case will
receive consideration.
Each Cadet so nominated will be required to pass
an examination shewing that he has reached the
same general standard of training as is reached by
Naval Cadets on leaving the Eoyal Naval College,
Osborne.
3. The Examination will be conducted near the
end of each Term, i.e., about April, August and
December, at the Royal Naval College, Osborne, and
will include tests in practical knowledge of the use
of tools and workshop processes as well as papers on
the subjects dealt with in the Osborne curriculum.
The Candidates, if successful, will be admitted to
the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, from the be-
ginning of the Term in January, May, or September
following the examination.
4. Each Candidate must possess the following
qualifications-
la.) He must be of very good character and eon-
duct, and in all respects fit for entry into
H.M. Navy.
(6.) For the entry in September 1915 and sub-
sequently the new rule will come into
force, viz. :— that a Cadec from the
"Conway" must be more than 15 years,
but not more than 15 years 4 mouths of
age on the 1st April, 1st August, or
1st December for the examinations in
April, August or December.
(a.) Certificate of birth.
(6.) Do. conduct,
(c.) Do. ability to swim.
(d.) Do. time served in training ship.
(e.) Do. time spent In practical
mechanical work, with
particulars of training.
The name and address of the parent or guardian
must also be supplied.
6. The regulations as to the provision by parents
or guardians of the outfit, payment of fees and
other expenses, while the Cadet is at Dartmouth, and
the private allowance after passing out, will be the
same as those with respect to other Naval Cadets.
7. Cadets entering under these regulations will be
subject in all respects to the same discipline and con-
ditions of service as other Cadets during theirperiod
of training at the R.N. College, Dartmouth, and will
be liable to removal for the same causes.
On passing out, they will be treated in the same
manner as the other Cadets, and will rank according
to the time gained and their position on the list.
Note.— Application for entry in the "Conway"
should be made to the Commanding Officer, School
Ship " Conway," Rock Ferry, Cheshire.

SPECIAL ENTRY OF NAVAL CADETS.
REGULATIONS FOR THE SPECIAL ENTRY
OF NAVAL CADETS, WHICH WILL REMAIN
IN JORGE AFTER T^E YEAR 1916, UNTIL
JURTHER NOTICE.
Note— The Begulations for the entry and training of
Nmal Cadet" at the Royal Naval Colleges at Osborne
and Dartmouth are contained in a separate document
which can be obtained on application to the Secretary
of the Admiralty, Whitehall, S.W. The scheme of
entry through Ofborne and Dartmouth is the main
method by which (ifficers are admitted to the Eoyal
Navy. A supplementary scheme of special admission,
which is called the "special Entry" Scheme, was
instituted in 1913 for a period of four years. This
Scheme will be continued, in the year 1917 and there-
after until further notice. The Begulations regarding
this "Special Entry" i'cheme are contained in the
present pamphlet.
1. The number of Naval Cadets to be admitted
under the following Begulations in June, 1917, will
depend upon the requirements of the Service.
2. Candidates for admission must be not more
than 18J nor lrfts than I7j years of age on the 1st of
June of the year in which the examination is held.
No nomination is required. Applications should be
made to the Secretary cf the Admiralty, Whitehall,
S W'., not. later than the 1st April. A form of aopli-
cation io be rilled in by the parent or guardian of
the candidate m^y im obtained from the Admiralty.
3. Candidates must be of pure European descent,
unii the 'Otis eiUn-r of natural boin or naturalised
British subjects. In doubtful ca»es the burden of
clear "roof will rest upon the Candidate.
Candidates must be unmarried.
4. Applicants "who sat.isly these conditions will he
invited to appear before a Committee at the
Admiralty. This Committee will interview each
Candidate and examine credentials furnished by
the headmaster of the school he is attending or last
attended. A report will be obtained beforehand
from the headmaster for the information of the
Committee as to the Candidate's conduct, abilities,
past training and general promise of suitability.
On the report of this Committee it will be deter-
mined whether the Candidate shall be admitted to
compete. Candidates will be required to pass at
the same time a Medical Examination, according
to the prescribed regulations, as to their physical
fitness for the Navy.
5. Every candidate must be In good health, and
free from any physical defect of body, impediment
of speech, defect of sight or hearing, and also from
any predisposition to constitutional or hereditary
disease or weakness of any kind, and be in ail
respects well developed and active in proportion to
his age.
It should be particularly noted that full normal
vision— as determined by Snellen's tests— is re-
quired for Candidates for Naval Cadetships. A
memorandum is issued by the Admiralty which
gives details of the physical requirements of
Candidates. (See page 864.)
6. Candidates admitted to compete will present
themselves for examination In June by the Civil
Service Commissioners. Particulars of the examin-
ation can be obtained from the Secretary, Civil
Service Commission, Burlington Gardens, W. (See
also Appendix I. attached.'
By arrangement between the Admiralty and the
War Office a candidate who is admitted to compete
in the examination for special entry as a Naval
Cadet may, if he so desires, and provided he fulfils
all the necessary conditions, present himself at the
same time for admission to the Royal Military
Academy, Tl oolwich, or Royal Military College,
Sandhurst, or to Supplementary first appointments
in the Royal Marines, In which case be mnst express
