ENTEY AND EXAMINATION OF OFFICERS.
REGULATIONS RESPECTING TSE ENTRY
OF ASSISTANT CLERliS.
1. Appointments to Assistant Clerkships will be
made by limited competition, with the {oUowing
exception, viz.:—
One candidate will be nominated annually, wlio
will be required to obtain such an asrgregate of
raarlfs in < lass I. as may satisfy the Civil Service
Commissioners.
2. This candidate will be selected by the Board of
Admiralty from sons of offli^ers of the Navy nr Royal
Marines who have iieen killed in action or who have
been lost at sea on active service, or killed on duty
or wlio have died ot wounds received in action or
injuries received on duty within six months from the
date of such action or injury, or who have performed
long and meritorious service.
Except as regards exemption from the competitive
examination, the candidate will be subject in all
respects to these regulations.
All other candidates will be nominated by the First
Lord of the Admiralty.

the candidate has reached the age of sixteen.
3. Two examinations for Assistant Clerkships will
be held annually— in .Tune and December- under
the d reetion of the Civ.l Service Commissioners
(addre^a— Burlington t-iardens, Lon on, W.).
Candidatfis will be required to pay a fee of 11. lOs.
to the ( ivil Service Commissioners before the Euii-
cational Examination.
The Civil Service Commissioners will deal with all
questions connected with such Examination, aud
will announce the results.
4. No candidate will be eligible for examination in
.Tune who is under 17 or over is years of age on the
15th July following, or for examinati m in December
who is under 17 or overlS years of age on the i.5th
.Tanuary following. As proof of tlie candidate's
eligibility in point of age, a Registrar''; CertiBi-at.e
of Blr'h must be produced. A eertlHcaie ot baptism
alone will not be accepted.
Candidates will be aUowed a deduction from
age in, re/'pect of actual military serHce yender-d in
H M. Forces during the war. An official certificate as
to the period of service must be furnished.
5. The number of Assistantt lerks to be entered at
each examination will be regulated by the require-
ments of the Service.
6. A candidate must be of pure European descent
and the son either—
(1) of natural horn British subjects, or
(2) of parents naturalised in the United Kingdom.
If any doubt arise"! upon this question the burden
of cl«ar proof that he is qualified will rest upon the
candidate himself.
7. Oardldates who may be sucoensful at tbe educa-
tional examination will be required to pass the
medical examination, according to the pres( ri'^ed
regnlations, before the Mectic^l Director-General of
tjie Navy, and must be found physically fit for the
Royal Navy.
They must be ta good health and free from any
physical defect ot bodv, impediment of speech, detect
of Btght or nearlug, and also from any predisposition
10 constitutional or hereditary dieeaiic, or weakness
of aiiv kind, and in all respects well developed aud
activd in proportion to theirage. The cases of short-
sighted candidates, in other respects Ht, will be
specially coasiderea.
A Medical Board of Apreal has been Instituted to
meet cases in which the parent or guardian of u
candidate is not satisfled with the result of the
Offli'lal Medical Examination. This Appeal Board
will consist ot the Director-General of the Medical
Department, of the Navy, a physician nominated by
the Medical Consultati\e Boa.d, and a specialist in
the particular ''Cfect which caused the disqualilica-
tion of the candioate, to he selected from a list
drawn up by the Consultative toard.
In the event of the rejection on medical grounds
of a cindidate, the parent or guaruian will at once
be informej that, subject to the payment of a fee
of four guineas, the candidate may present himhclt
for re-examination by he Appeal B aiO, and that if
an appeal is desired notification must be n.aoe by
the parent or guardiin to the Director General c£
the Medical Department, Admiralty, within a week
of the first Medical Examination. Th^ notification
irust be accompnuied by a cheque for tour guineas
made payable to the Accouiitant-i-ieneralot ttieNavy.
With a view to preventing candidates who may be
physically unfit lor his Majesty's Service from in-
curring the inconvenience and expense ot preparing
for commissions in Royal Na\y, it is si.ggested that
they should undergo i-xamination by ihe meoical
adviser lif the family, ■ r by any other qualified
medical practitiojier. A list of the deiecis which
causB rejection appears on page 864.
It is to be understood that this private exam'na
tion is merely suggeste > as a guide f"r intending
candidates and to lessen the chances ot disappoint-
ment, and that it is by no means intended to ial;e
the place of, or to influence in any way, the regular
official Physical Examination.
8. Candidates if r omlnated will be required to
produce (1) certifi'-ates of good conduct from tlic
masters of anv s hools at which they may have been
educated during the two previous yeais, or. If
educated at home, from their tutor or the clergyman
of the parish in which they reside ; k2) a certificate
of ability to swim
9. Candidates will be examlced in the following
subjects ill Class I., and must obtain such au aggre-
gate ot marks as will sntisfy the Civil Service Com-
missioners. They will also be permitted to present
themselves for examination in two other subjects
under Class II.:—
Class I. MARKS.
1. Arithmetic, including .\fensura-

'i Mathematics will include the following, practi-
cally treated :-
Triangle, the number and nature ot the conditions
that determine it, simple relations among its parts.
P.arallels; Areas, expression for the area ot a parai-
lelog am and ot a triangle in terms of base and height;
making triangle or square equal to any given figure ;
volumes easily deduced. Arithmetiial deflniti ns ot
rathi; properties 1 similar figures. Sine, cosine ana
tangent I'f angles less than 1 80°. Circle, simple rela-
tions angle properties, tangents and rectangle pro-
perties. Algebraic formulas, graphs, equations, in-
dices, logarithms in connection with the above and
other problems. Theorem of Pythagoras and its ex-
tension to any triangle. The formulas a-"— b'j+c2-
2bc cosA and sinA/a=sinB/b=sinC/c aud their
application to the solution of triangles. Expression
of sin2A and cos2A in terms of sinA and cosA,
