EOYAL NAVAL AIE SEEVICE.-conf*.
S4. At the expiration of their active service
officers will be eligible to receive a gratuity depend-
ing on the length of their service at tlie rate oJ 150L
for each lompleted year of service, including their
probationary period. This gratuity will be paid to
them on tlie expiration of their active service period
35. An officer retired at his own request, or for
physical unfitness due to causes beyond his own
control, may be awarded such gratuity as the
Admiralty think fit, not exceeding I50i.,for each com-
pleted year of ser\-ice (Including probationai-j'
service).
•56. Officers of the Royal Naval Air r=ervice injured
whilst flying, either on duty or whei. ar-dergoing a
course of instruction at one of the Insiractioiial
E-tablishments, or pnxateiy with the peimissii n of
tlie Admiralty, will be eligible for pensions and
gratuities under tlie same conditions and on the
same scales as in ihe case of other offi-ers of the
Military Brancli of the Royal Nax^ of their corres-
ponding ranlc wounded in action. OfBters injured
on duty, but not while actually flying, will be treated
as regards wounds, tensions and gratuities m the
same manner as officers of corresponding rault in the
Military Brancli injured on duty, bub not iu action.
37. The widows and children of officers dying
whilst in the Royal Kaval Air Service will, subject
to the completion of the necessary peiiod of coni-
mission^d service ni the active list, be eligit'le tor
pensions and compassionate a lowances under the
same conditions mid on the same sca'ei as officers
of con esnonding rank iu the Military B anch of the
Royal Navy; but in tlie event of an officer's deatli
being attributable to an inj ry s'lstained whilst Hy-
ing, either on duty or when undergoing a course of
instruction at on- of the instructional Bstabii^h-
ments, a7id occurring within seven yi ars of the date
of such injury, tlie award of pensions, gratuities or
compassionate allowances to the offlicr's widow and
children or other relaiive will be made. Irrespective
of the length of service, under the conditions applic-
able to the case of officers of corresponding rank in
the Military Branch of the Royal Navy killed in
action. In the event of deaih resulting from an
injua' sustained on duty, but not whilst flying, any
pensions and allowances awarded to dependent
relatives will be on the scale !.nd. subject to the
conditions laid down for officers of iheir correspond-
ing rauk in the Military Branch, whose deaths are
aitributahle to injuries received on duty, but not in
action.
38. Probationary Flight Sub-Lieutenants will, if
injured whilst flying, either on duty or when under-
going a course of instruction at any of the Instruc-
tional Esiablishments, or privately with the permis-
sion of the Admiralty, be eligible for pensions and
gratuities under the sair;e cu.iditions and on the
same scales as .^ub-Lieutenanti-, Royal Nav> .wounded
in action, and in the event of death occurring as the
result of such injury within seven years, pensions,
&c., will be awarded to iheoffli er's widow and chil-
dren orother relative under the conditions applicable
in the case 6f Sub-Lieutenants, .Royal Na^y,killed In
action or dying of wounds received inaction. Proba-
tionary Flight Suii-Lieutenants, it injured on duty
but not whilst flying, will ue awarded tensions and
gratuities on the scales and subject tothecon"ition.-<
laid down for Sub-Lieutenants, Royal NaN y, inj ured
on duty, I ut not in action. In the event of death
resulting from an injury sustained on duty but not
whilst flying, any pension': and allowances awarded
to dependent relatives will be on the scale and suVi-
joct to the conditions laid down for iSui>-Lieutenants,
Royal Navy, whose deaths are attributable to injuries
received on duty, but not in action. But in the event
of a Probationary Flight Suti-l ieutenant dying dur-
ing bis period of probation from natural causes no
pension or compassionate allowance will be granted
to the widow, eliildron, or other relatives of the
officer.

1. Appolntinents as Probationary Second Lieu-
tenant Royal Marines will be oHered annually to ;
Candidates who may pass siieeesF fully a competitive
examination and bo otherwise qualitied as detailed.

3. The examination of Candidates will be con
ducted by the Civil Service Commissioners In tho \
month of June as specified in Secilon III. 'i'hc j
examination will lie held in London, and such other \
centres as the Commissioners may appoint. The ]
fee for the e.xamination in London will be 21. and at
any other centre 3(., in addition to any local fee^
The oral and practical parts of ihe examination will
be held in London only.
i. Every Candidate lor examination must iiiuke
application to the Secretary of the Admiralty not
later than the 1st of April of the year of examina-
tion
B, Candidates must be unmarried. The limits of
ago will be from 17 to 19. Candidates must have attain -
ed the age of 17 and must not have attained the age
of 19 on the first of June of the year of examination.
(; Candidates will be required to present them-
selves at the Admiralty, where theywill be separately
interviewed before they are admitted to compete at
the examination. Those admitted to compete will
be given the necessary forms, after the interview, to
enable them to make application to the Civil Service
Commissioners to be examined. t
7 A Candidate must be of pure European descent
and the sou either of nataral-bovn British subjects
or of parents naturalised in the United Kingdom.
In doubtful cases the burden of clear proof will rest
npou the Caudldatc. He must also nroduceacertili-
cate of his ability to swim, and a certificate of birtli ,
