864 PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, <^c._ENTRY ic. OFFICERS.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR CANDIDATES FOR
COMMISSIONS IN THE ROYAL NAVY.
TVith a view to nreventing Candidates who may be
physically untit for His Majesty's Service irom in-
curring the inconvenience and expense o£ preparing
for commissions in the Koyal ^ avy, it is suggested
that they undergo examination by the medical
adviser ol the taiiuly, or any other qualiUed medical
practitioner, to whom the loUowiug list o£ delects
which cause rejection may be submitted lor guidance.
It is to be understood that this private examina-
tion is merely suggested as a guide lor intending
(Jandidates and to lessen tile chances ol disappoint-
ment, and that it is by no means intended to take
the place ol, or to influence in any way, the regular
OtHcial Physical examination.
1. A weak constitution, imperfect development,
physical weakness, either hereditary or from chronic
disease, wounds, or injuries.
2. iSkin disease, unless temporary or trivial.
3. JUallormatiou oi the head, deformity from
fracture or depression ol the bones of the skull, im-
paired intellect, epilepsy, paralysis, or impediment
of speech.
4. Bliudness or defective of vision, imperfect per-
ception ol colours, Hstula lacliry malis, or any chronic
disease of the eyes or eyelids. Candidates lor N aval
Cadetships must possess lull normal vision as de-
termined by Snellen's tests, each eye being separately
examined, lor Candidates lor other branches of the
Royal Navy, full normal vision is not required, but
any delect of vision must be due to errors of refrac-
tion which can be corrected to normal by glasses,
and vision without glasses must in any case be
not less than B/bo with each eye, and the candidate
must also be able to read l;=o,6 ol Snellen's test
types.
0. Impaired hearing or discharge from one or both
ears or any disease ol the external, middle, or internal
ear.
6. Disease of the bones of the nose, or ol its
cartilages, nasal polypus, or disease of the naso-
pharynx.
7. Disease of the tliroat, tongue, palate, or tonsils ,
i many unsound teeth, + unhealthy gums, disease of
I the glands ol the throat or neck, external cicatiicee,
if at all extensive, and especially if adherent.
8. Functional or organic disease of the heart or
blood vessels, deformity or contraction of the chest,
or auy symptom of lung disease or tendency thereto.
9. Undue swelling or distension of the abdomen,
obesity, disease or enlargement of the abdominal
organs. Kupture, weakness or distension of the
abdominal rings ; any disease of the bladder or in-
continence of urine.
10. The existence of any defect of th ■ genital
organs, or of varicocele when it clearly forms, oris
likely to lorm, a serious impediment to the eOicient
performance of duty, e.g., when it is associated with
' varicose veins or piles.
11. Paralysis, weakness, impaired motion or de-
I formity of the upper or lower extremities, from
whatever cause ; a varicose state of the veins,
I especially of tue leg. Bunions, distortion or mal-
I formation of the hands, feet, fingers, or toes.
j 12. Distortion of the spine, of the bones of the
I chest, or pelvis, from injury or constitutional delect.
IS'o person will be admitted into His Majesty's
Service unless he has been vaccinated. Re-vaccina-
tion will also be required if considered necessary.
, t i.e.— Seven teeth defective or deficient in persons
under 17 years of age on the date of entry, ten de-
fective or deficient teeth in persons above the age of
17— a tooth being considered as detective when it
cannot be made permanently ser\'iceable by dental
repair. Credit is also given lor teeth which have not
erupted. Candidates must, however, possess some
sound opposing molars and incisors. The numbers
given above are intended as a general guide, and are
not necessarily strictly adhered to, provided the
general condition of the teeth is good.
ROYAL NAVAL AIR SERVICE.
REGULATIONS FOE THE SPECIAL
EOYAL NAVAL
1. The following regulations are lor the admission
ol candidates from civil life into the Royal Naval
Air Service for service for a limited number of
years.
•J. As a general rule candidates for admission
must not be more than 23 nor less than 19 years of
ago on date of application.
3. Employment in the first instance will be for
four years, after which period otBcers entered under
these regulations wiil pass into the Reserve lor a
further period of four years' service, unless their
term of active service is extended or renewed. < 'U
completion ot the first year of their engagement tliey
may, if considered suitable, be allowed to extend
their original engagement to a total of 6 years' con-
tinuous service; alter 4 years' service to a total of
8 years; and after 6 years' service to a total of lu years;
or alternatively they may be permitted to renew their
cn^agemeni on its completion in the orainary course.
The Admiralty reserve the right of offering further
continuous service after 10 years, if their Lordships
see fit to do so. In all cases active or continuous
service will be followed by 4 years' service in the
Reserve.
4. The service will consist of employment in con-
nection with any type of aircraft in any part of the
world, either a'ahore or afloat.
5. Candidates selected -svill be entered as Pro-
bationary Flight Suo-Lieutenants, Royal Navy, and
will be granted commissions when duly qualifled.
9. Applications for admission should be made to
the Secretary of the Admiralty, Whitehall, S.W. 'J he
form of application is to be tilled in by the parent or
guardian of the candidate, if he is not above the age
of 21. These forma may be obtained from the
Secret -iry ot th* iidmiralty.
ENTRY OF OFFICERS INTO THE
AIR SERVICE.
7. Candidates must be of pure European descent,
and the sous either of natural born or naturalised
British subjects, in doubilul cases the burden of
cltar pioof will rest upon the candidate.
8. No nomination is required.
9. Applicants who satisfy these conditions will be
invited to appear before an Air Service Committee,
who will interview eacn candidate, and examine
credentials, which will have been luijnisfed betore-
hana by tbe candidate. Details of the credentials
requireuwiU be gu en in the ai.pl cation lorm referred
to above. 'Tiiey will include reports from the head-
master o( the last edu ational establishment the
candiuate attenued, from persons under whose
authority the canuidate may ha e been during the
preceding several years, or from persons wbo are well
acquainted with the character of tne candidate.
The Committee will decide therefrom, on the suit-
ability or otherwise of the candidate with regard to
his abil ties and general character; and will submit
their reconimendations to the Lords Commissioners
of the Aamiralty for decision.
10. Cand' date'< will be required to pass at the same
time a medical examination according to the pre-
scribed regulations as to their physical;fitness for the
Naval Air Serviee.
11. Every candidate must be in good health and
free fron any physical defect of body, impediment of
speech, defc t ol vision or hearing, and also from any
predisposition to constiiutional or hereditary aisease
or weakness of any kind, and be in aU respects well
developed and a good athlete, it should be particu-
