ENTRY AND EXAMINATION OF OFFICERS.
(c) H.M.S. " Vernon."
23. In the middle of November the course of
Electrical. Telegraphic, and Torpedo instruction in
H.M.S. "Vernon" will begin. This course will
occupy about three months including Christmas
leave, and on its conclusion an examination will
take place.
(d) H.M.S. •'Excellent."
^ 24. The Gunnery course of 11 weeks in H.M.S.
"Excellent" will commence about the middle of
February and will also terminate with an examin- 1
ation.
(e ' Embarkation in a Cruiser.
26. The Officers will embark about the middle of |
May, for a period of six months, in a cruiser for
instruction in Naval duties. Before disembarkation I
an Intermediate examination in these duties will ,'
be held, after which leave will be granted until the I
end of December.
(/) Head Quarters, Royal Marines.
26. On the 1st January the Officers will proceed
to one of the Royal Marine Head Quarters, where i
theoretical instruction will be combined with |
practical work in the duties of an Officer Royal
Marines until the following September.
(g) Royal Naval College, Greenwich (2nd Course:.
27. The second course at the Royal Naval College,
Greenwich, will extend from the 1st October to the
middle of the following June. During this period
the Officers will be instructed in military subjects,
including a course of riding. The final examination
in military subjects will then take place and the
Officers will receive their commissions.
(ft) Embarkation in a Battleship.
28. Early in August the Officers will "embark in
battleships as Subalterns of the detachment under
a Captain Royal Marines.
29. During this embarkation, which will extend
over a period of about twelve months, Officers will
receive further instruction in deck duties and
navigation, and at the same time will take their
part in all the routine work connected with the
Detachment Royal Marines.
On completion of this tour of duty afloat. Officers
will be finally examined in Naval subjects.
30. Subalterns who have obtained a " First " class
certificate in each of the final professional examin-
ations will receive the increase of pay, and also,
when embarked, take relative rank with Lieutenants
R.N. from the date of the examination.
Clothing, Accoutrements, &c.
Officers appointed to the Royal Marines will be re-
quired to provide themselves with the following
articles of Uniform Clothing, Accoutrements, &c, at
the periods stated below.
The Dress Regulations are printed in deta.il in the
Quarterly Navy List. Sealed patterns of Uniform
and Equipment may be seen at the Admiralty Pattern
Rooms, Broadway, Westminster, S.W.
The Uniform will be thit prescribed for Officers,
R.M.L.I., except the buttons which are of a special
pattern.
1. Before joining the Royal Naval College, Greenwich,
on Appointment as 2nd Lieutenant. — 2 serge frocks,
1 mess jacket, 1 mess vest (stand-up collar and a
black tie will be required for mess dress', 1 forage
cap (badge-globe and laurel, no bugle), 1 tin case for
cap, 2 white cap covers, l field service cap (orna-
ment same as collar badge of frock), 1 pair mess
overalls, 1 pair uniform trousers, 2 pairs serge work-
ing trousers, 1 pea jacket, 1 uniform waterproof coat
and cape, l pair patent leather Wellington boots,
1 pair calf Wellington boots, 1 pair leggings, 1 set
boot trees, 2 pairs lace boots, with plain toe caps,
1 uniform tin case full length), 2 cricket; shirts,
2 pairs white flannel trousers, 1 white sweater, 1
gymnasium belt, dark blue, 1 pair white gymnasium
shoes, 1 svjord and leather scabbard (Infantry
pattern,., 1 set Sam Browne belt and slings, 1 brown
leather sword knot, 2 pairs brown regulation gloves,
1 pair field glasses, high power.
2. On joining Head Quarters.— 1 pair blue cloth-
pantaloons, 2 pairs blue puities, 1 haversack (Corps
pattern), 1 water-botile (Corps pattern), 1 whistle
(Corps pattern, 1 .
3. Before joining Cruiser. — 1 frock coat, 1 web wai.'it
belt and full dress slings, 1 crimson silk sslBh, l gold
sword knot, l waistbelt with brown leather slings,
2 pairs white gloves, l steel scabbard.
i. On receiving a Commission. — Full-dress tunic and
remainder of uniform.
Note.— The rates of pay for Marine Officers entered
under these regulations are given at page 786a.
REGULATIONS FOR CHAPLAINS, E.N.
Admiralty,
December, 1911.
Entet.
1. To render a Candidate eligible for appointment
as a Chaplain in the Royal Navy he must fulfil the
following conditions : —
(a) He must be an ordained Deacon and Priest of
the Church of England, or admitted to the
same Holy Orders by the lawful authority of
one of the Churches within the Realm of
Great Britain and Ireland which are in com-
munion with the Church of England.
(6) He must not hold any benefice with a Cure of
* Souls.
(c) Ho must produce satisfactory testimonials from
the Bishop of the Diocese in which he was
last licensed, addressed to the Lords Com-
missioners of the Admiralty.
Id) His age must not exceed 30, or in certain ex-
ceptional cases 35 years.
(e) He must have been examined by the Chaplain
of the Fleet, and reported by him to he in
every respect a tit and proper person to serve
as Chaplain in His Majesty's Service.
(/) He must be pronounced physically fit for ser-
vice by the Medical Director General of the
Navy.
2. Every Chaplain appointed for service must, as a
condition to such appointment, receive a special
ecclesiastical licence from the Archbishop of Canter-
bury and his successors, such licence to be one
capable of recognition by all Bishops and other
Authorities of the Church of England throughout
the world during the period such Chaplain shall re-
main on the Active List of the Royal Navy.
3. Chaplains will be appointed for a period of four
years only in the first instance. They will not be
retained beyond that period unless the requirements
of the Service render it desirable, and unless they
have proved themselves to be in every way suitable
for permanent duty in the Navy. Chaplains not so
retained will be discharged with a gratuity under
clause 7 of these Regulations.
Resignation before the expiration of four years'
Service may be permitted, in special circumstances,
at the discretion of the Admiralty.
In the event of discharge after short service the
names of Chaplains who are recommended will be
specially brought to the notice of the Bishop in whose
Diocese they may desire to take duty.

t The three years' qualifying service may be dis-
pensed with at the discretion of their Lordships
under the conditions shown in the King's Regula-
tions and Admiralty Instructions.
