* A Colonel Commandant who has not attained the age for compulsory retirement to have the
option, on expiration of command, of being placed on the Reserved last of Colonels with the full pay
of a Colonel Commandant, and to be eligible up to the age of 65 for the appointment of
Adjutant General, Royal Marines. (Order-in-Council of 10th August, 1909.)
** A Second Commandant passed over for appointment to the command of a division may,
at the discretion of the Admiralty, be retired on a maximum of £600, deducting £15 a year for
each year of his age short of 60, or upon the retirement to which he would have been entitled
under the Orders in Council of 22nd February, 1870, and 5th February, 1872.
t A Lieutenant-Colonel with six years' service in that rank may, at his option, be placed
upon a special half-pay list, and be eligible for promotion and employment on the staff up to 54
years of age.
$ Under Order in Council of 24th November, 1891, a Major may be retained after the age of
48, at the discretion of the Admiralty.
I The case of a Captain who may be prevented from passing by illness or other unavoidable
cause will be specially considered.

Voluntary retirement to be allowed, at the discretion of the Admiralty, as follows :—
