scale a hill in the possession of the enemy, who had cut up a detachment of 40 men under Ensign Sitwell ; drove off

Sonthal campaign in 1855. Also in the Indian Mutiny campaign in 1857-59, and was present at four engagements-
with rebels at Dumoh, and twice repulsed attacks on the Fort of Rehli, employed in hunting down rebels in the?
Saugor district while in command of the Police Battalion; co-operated in attacking a body of rebels 1500 strong at
Hirdeemgnr, killing 150 of them, and present at the attack on Patrakotah and Luckungur (Modal/.
160 Colonel [he Hon. R. V. Dillon was present at the capture of Canton in Dec. 1857 (Medal with Clasp).
161 Colonel E. C. Domville was landed in 1845 with a Detachment of Reyal Marines for the protection of British
property at Monte Video. He was there detached for service in the Parana, and was present at th9 attack and'
capture of the Ports of Obligado, and forcing the passage of the river. Commanded a Detachment at Rat Island,,
off Monte Video, and was at the defence of Colonia in the River Plate in March and April 1847.
162 Colonel R. H. P. Doran served with the 50th Regiment io the Crimea from 22nd iNov. 1854, including the sieges
and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal). Served also the several campaigns in New Zealand
from 15th Nov. 1863 to 1866. and was present at Waiari (mentionel in despatches), the storm and capture of Rmgia-
whia, repulse of the enemy's attack on the Camp at Nukumaru, and the affair of Kakiramea (Medal). SdrvetS
with the 1st Battalion West Kent Regiment throughout the Egyptian war of 1S82, and was present at the action at
Kassasin on the 9th September (Medal, and Khedive's Star).
103 Colonel J. C. Douglas served with the Zhob Valley Expedition in 1884.
161 Colonel R. Douglas served with the Buffs at the battle of Puuniar (Bronze Star).
165 Colonel T. P. Dowden served in the Afghan war in 18/9-80, and took part in the march to Candahar with the-,
force under Major General Phayre (mentioned in despatches, Medal).
166 Colonel H. C. G. Dugdale served with the 2nd Battalion Rifle Brigade during the whole of its service in
suppression of the Indian Mutiny, including the actions at Cawnpore, capture of Lucknow, and numerous affairs
during the Oude campaign (Medal with Clasp). Embarked for the Gold Coast with the 2nd Battalion Rifle
Brigade, and served throughout the second phase of the Ashanti war in 1874, including the battle of Amoaful,
commanded iietacbment at defence of Quarman, battle of Ordahsu and capture of Coomassie (Medal with Clasp).
167 Colonel F. W. Dunbar served in Burmah in 1853 against the rebel chief Gounghee. Also through the Sontham
campaign of 1855 and captured one of the chief rebel leaders. Present at the outbreak at Benares on the 4th June
1857, and in the engagement there with the rebels. Served with the Goorkha force in the Goruckpure and Azimghur
Districts (Medal).
168 Colonel W. M. Dunbar served with the 34th Regiment in the Crimea from the 12th July 1855, including the
siege and fall of Sebastopol, and assault of the Redan on the Sth Sept. (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal).
Also in the Indian campaigns in 1857-59, including the actions at Cawnpore on 26th, 27th and 28th Nov. 1857,
siege and capture of Lucknow, relief of Azimghur, defeat of the rebels at Bootwul, and affair at Bhowanie (Medal
with Clasp). Served with the 2nd Battalion 24th Regiment in the Kafir war of 1878. Commanded the 1st.
Battalion 24th Regiment in the second advance into Zululand in the war of 1879, and was present in the engage-
ment at Ulundi (Brevet of Lt.Colonel, Medal with Clasp).
16a Colonel S. Llunlop was appointed Commissioner in Perak shortly after the commencement of hostilities in.
November 1875, and by his able and energetic co-operation mainly contributed to the success of the combined,
naval and military operations under Major General Colborue and Captain Buller, R.N., which ended in the-
capture of Kinta (Medal with Clasp).
170 Colonel A. Durand served with the 10th Bombay Native Infantry in the Central India campaign of 1857-58,.
and was present at the assault and capture of Rowaii (slightly wounded), siege and capture of Awah, siege andi
storming of Kotah, battle of Kota ke Serai, battle and capture of Gwalior, siege and santure of Powrie, actions
of Beejapore and Koondrye, and capture of Nargurh (Medal with Clasp), Served in the Ab3'ssinian campaign of
1867-68 as Staff Officer of the Advance Brigade, and Brigade Major of the Pioneer Force and 3rd Brigade 1st.
Division ; and was present with the :oth Bombay Native Infantry at the assault and capture of Magdala (Medal)-
Served in the Afghan war in 1880 as 2nd in command of the 10th Bombay Native Infantry, and commanded a
Field Column of Cavalry, Sappers, and Infantry which forced the Chupper Rift and cleared the road to Peshin.

171 Colonel C. J. Durand served with the 42nd Highlanders in the Indian Mutiny campaign of 1857-59, an ^-
was present at the defeat of the Gwalior Contingent at Cawnpore, actions of Seria Ghat, Kalee Nuddee, and
Shumshabad, siege and capture of Lucknow, including the storming of the Martiniere, Bank's Bungalow, and the
Begum's Kotee ; also present at the attack on the fort of Rooya, action of Allygunge, and capture of Bareilly (Medal
with Clasp). Served with the 21st Bengal Native Infantry during the rebellion in the Cossyah and Jynteeah Hills,,
1862-63, and was present at the storming and capture of the Surteung stockades (twice mentioned in despatches).
Served with the 30th Bengal Native Infantry during the Bhootan campaign of 1864-65, and present at the recapture
of the stockades at the Pala Pass, Nadoo, and other operations (Medal with Clasp).
172 Colonel A. G. Durnford served with the Bechuanaland Expedition under Sir Charles Warren in 1S84-S5 as-
Commanding Royal Engineer (mentioned in despatohes).
173 Colonel J. Duval served as a volunteer with the 9th Madras Native Infantry at Rangoon at the close of the
Burmah campaign in 1853. Commanded a party of the Pegu Light Infantry in pursuit of the rebel chieftain-
Woung Gong Gh.vee in 1844 and 1845 in the Tharrawaddie districts.
174 Colonel E. H. Dyke served in the Indian Mutiny campaign in 1857-58, and was present at the sies-e and
capture of Lucknow (Medal with Clasp).
175 Colonel E. L. Earle served throughout the siege of Delhi in 1857, and was wounded on the right side by a
musket-ball (mentioned in despatches, Medal with Clasp).
176 Colonel F. L. Edridge served with the 20th Regiment in the Crimea in 1855, including the siege of Sebastopol
and capture of Kinbourn (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal). Also in the Indian campaign from August
1858, including the Trans Gogra operations under Lord Clyde (Medal).
177 Colonel R. Elias served with the 59th Regiment in the Afghan war of 1878-80, and was present in the;
engagements at Ahmed Kheyl and Urzoo near Ghuznee (Medal with Clasp).
178 Colonel H. L. Ellaby served with the expedition to China in i860, and was present at the capture of the Taku
Forts (Medal with Clasp). Also served in the operations against the Taeping rebels in the vicinity of Shanghai in
■L862 with the force under General Staveley. Served in South Africa throughout the Zulu war of 1879 (Medal with.
Clasp).
179 Colonel John Elliott s?rved with the China expedition in 1842 (Medal). Was in H.M.S. Fox during the action
with the stockade batteries, and destruction of the Burmese war- boats in the Rangoon River, on the 10th Jan. 1852 - r
commanded the Royal Marines at the destruction of the same stockades on the 4th April ; landed in command of
the Marines during the whole of the operations against Rangoon, from the nth to the 17th April ; commanded the
Marines on the expedition to Mobee against the Army of the Governor of Rangoon (officially thanked) ; and after-
wards at the storm and capture of the city of Bassein (wounded, and honourably mentioned in both Naval and
Military despatches), as also the Royal Marines embarked in the steam flotilla on the Irrawaddy, and severely
wounded on thu advance to Prome (honourably mentioned in Governor General's despatch) ; Medal with Clasp for
Pegu. Served in thu R.M. Battalion in co-operation with the French Army at the bombardment and surrender of
the forts of Bomarsund, in Aug. 1854 (Baltic Medal). With the combined force during the siege of Sebastopol in
1855, the expedition to Kertch and Yeni Kale, and action with the outer forts of Sebastopol on the 17th June (Medal
witn Clasp, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Has also the Medal for the Kaffir war.
18 » Colonel C. J. Ellis served in the Kaffir war of 1846-47 (Medal). Served with the Baltic Expedition in 1854
(Medal); was Adjutant to the 2nd Battalion during the siege of Sebastopol and at the battle of Balaklava in the
same year, and Aide de Camp to Colonel Hurdle at its fall, as also at the surrender of Kinbourn (Medal with two-
Clasps, Sardinian Medal, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Served with the China Expedition of 1857-
60 as Aide de Camp to Colonel Holloway, including the blockade of the Canton river, the landing before, storm and
capture of the city (Brevet of Major, Medal with Clasp). Appointed Maior of Brigade to the Royal Marines in
August 1853.
181 Colonel J. W. Elmes served in the Zulu war in 1879 (Medal with Clasp). Served in the Boer war of 1881.,
