587a General Officers Retired under Royal Warrant. — War Services,
by Governor General in Council, a year's service for Lucknow, Medal with Clasp, and Brevet of Major). Served
in the campaign on the North West Frontier of India in 1864 against the Mohmunds (Medal). Served in the
Afghan war from November 1878 to March 1879 with the force under Sir Donald Stewart (Medal).
99 Lieut. General the Hon. R. Monck served with the 4.3rd Regiment in the Kaffir war in 1853 (Medal).
100 Sir Robert Hay served as Assistant Adjutant General of Artillery with the expedition to China in i36o, and
was present at Sinho, Tangku, capture of Taku Forts, actions near Tangchow, aud surrender of Pekin (Brevet of
Major, Medal with two Clasps) .
101 Lt.General B. L. Gordon served in the Indian mutiny campaign in 1857-58, and was present at the Relief of
Lucknow, including the operations at the Martiniere and Dilkoosha, and was also engaged in the action and defeat
of the Gwalior Contingent at Cawnpore on the 6th Dec. 1857, and pursuit (Medal with Clasp). Served in. the Afghan
war in 1879-80, and was present in the engagement at Charasiab on the 6th October 1879 (mentioned in despatches)
and in the operations round Cabul in December 1879 (mentioned in despatches, CB., Medal with two Clasps).
Served with the Burmese Expedition in 1886-87 in command of the Lower Burmah Division (received the thanks
of the Government of India, mentioned in despatches, Medal with Clasp). Served with the Chin Lushai Expe-
ditionary Force in command of the Burmah District (received the thanks of the Government of India, mentionei
in despatches. Clasp).
102 Lt.General G. D. Pritchard served during the Indian Mutiny of 1857-59 with the 23rd Company Royal
Engineers, and was present at the action of Khuj wa, throughout the relief of Lucknow by Lord Clyde, battle of
Cawnpore on 6th Dec. 1857, action of Khodagunge, siege and capture of Lucknow, throughout the Rohilcund
campaign, including the attack on Fort Rooya, action of Allygunge, and capture of Bareilly ; throughout the Oude
and Trans-Gogra campaign, including the action of Dounderakera attack on Fort Oomreah, action of Burjeedia,
capture of Fort Musjeedia, and affair on the Raptee near Bankee (Medal with two Clasps). Served during the
China war of 1S60, and was present at the actions of Sinho and Tangku, led the assaulting party (after Major
Graham, Royal Engineers was wounded) at the storming of the North Taku Fort, being one of the first to enter
(mentioned in despatches for gallant conduct in taking up ladders and bridging the ditch under a heavy fire) - r
was present at the affairs of the 18th and 23rd Sept., and the surrender of Pekin (mentioned in despatcheSi
Medal with two Clasps, and Brevet of Major). Commanded the 10th Company Royal Engineers throughout the
Abyssinian campaign and was present at the action of Arogee, and storming of the Fortress of Magdala —
wounded in the right arm and shoulder (mentioned in despatches, Brevet of Lt. Colonel, and Medal).
103 Sir W. J. Williams served in the Crimean campaign from May 1855, including the siege and fall of
Sebastopol (wounded), in Trenches with siege train, and at bombardments of 6th and 17th June (Brevet of
Major, Medal with Clasp, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Served with the Jowaki Afreedee-
Expedition in 1877-78 in command of the Artillery (mentioned in despatches, Medal with Clasp). Served in the,
Afghan war in 1878-79, and was present at the attack and capture of Ali Musjid (mentioned in despatches, Medal
with Clasp).
104 Sir Charles Knight Pearson served as Adjutant of the 31st Regiment in the Crimea from 3rd Sept. 1S55,.
including the siege and fall of Sebastopol and attack of the 3th Sept. (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal).
Served in the Zulu war of 1879 in command of No. 1 Column, a force of all arms, which invaded Zululand by the
passage of the Lower Tugela. On the 22nd January he defeated in the action of Inyezane a Zulu force which in.
superior numbers had taken up position to overwhelm him at a formidable pass called Majia's Hill. He then,
advanced and formed the fortified post of Ekowe. and held it while invested by the enemy for two months, after
which the place was relieved by Lord Chelmsford (KCMG., Medal with Clasp).
105 Lt.General B. H. Pottinger served as D.A.Q.M. General throughout the Abyssinian campaign, having landed.
at Zoulla with the Reconnoitering Party on the 2nd October 1867; present at the action of Arogee and fall of Mag-
dala (mentioned in despatches, Brevet of Maior, and Medal).
106 Sir J. Bevan Edwards served in the Crimea from 14th Sept. 1855, and was employed in tne demolition of the-
Docks of Sebastopol (Medal, and Turkish Medal). Served in India in 1857-59, an< i commanded a Company of the
Royal Engineers throughout the campaign in Central India under Sir Hugh Rose ; present at the siege and storm-
ing of Chandairee (commanded the ladder party at the assault, mentionod in despatches), siege and storming of.
Jhansi (directed the only two successful columns of assault), actions of the Betwah and Koonch (mentioned in
despatches), actions before Calpee from the 15th to the 21st May, action of Goolowlee on 22nd May, in which he
supported with his Company a portion of the 25th Bombay Native Infantry which had been driven back by over-
powering numbers (specially mentioned in Sir Hugh Rose's despatch for " prompt resolution in charging most
successfully the very superior force of the rebels, routing them with loss, and pursuing them till out of reach"),,
capture of Calpee, action before and capture of Gwalior. Served as Commanding Engineer with Colonel Liddell's
Column in Bundlekund in August, September and October 1858, and also with Colonel Meade's Column in Central
India in February, March and April 1859, clearing the jungles and in the pursuit and capture of Tantia Topee
(Medal with Clasp, Brevet of Major, and CB.), Served in the Soudan campaign m 18S5 as Colonel on the
Staff Commanding Royal Engineer, and was present in the engagement at Hasheen and at the destruction of
Temai — mentioned in despatches as " having commanded the Royal Engineers in an exceptionally able manner,"
and for having rendered " unfailing assistance m carrying out the many engineering operations which had to be
undertaken " (Medal with Clasp, and Khedive's Star).
107 Lt.General S. M. Wiseman-Clarke served with the 93rd Highlanders the Eastern campaign of 1854-55,
including the battles of Alma and Balaklava, siege and fall of Sebastopol, capture of Kertch and Yenikale (MedaL
with three Clasps, and Turkish Medal). Also the Indian campaign of 1857-59, including relief of Lucknow by
Lord Clyde, battle of Cawnpore on 6th Dec, pursuit of the enemy and capture of their guns at Seraighat, action,
at Kallee Nuddie ; taking of Futtehghur, expedition to Mhow under Brigadier Hope, siege and cajrture of
Lucknow (m entioned in Si r E . Lugard'sdespatches) , and subsequent affairs ending in the capture of Bareilly (Medal
with two Clasps).
106 Lieut.General H. J, Buchanan served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 as Adjutant of the 47th Regiment,
including the battles of Alma and Inkerman; sortie of 26th Oct., siege and fall of Sebastopol— appointed Town
Major (Medal with three Clasps, Sardinian and Turkish Medals, 5th Class of the Medjidie). Commanded a
Column of the Field Force under Brigadier-General Ross against the Afreedees on the North- West Frontier 111.
1877-78 (mentioned in despatches, CB., Medal with Clasp).
109 Lt.General T. Ross commanded a detached force on the Nepaul Frontier in 1859 ; drove the rebels from the
plains of Tilawara where there was a large bazar, aud next day attacked them in the jungle of Pipurea, the whole
rebel army in consequence retired to Botoul, where they were cut up by Sir R. Kelly — for general services on th£
frontier was highly complimented by the Commander in Chief and Sir R. Kelly (Medal).
110 Sir Henry Weare served with the 32nd Regiment the Punjaub campaign of 1848, including the first siege,
operations before Mooltan (Medal with Clasp). Served the Eastern campaign of 1854 as D.A. Adj. General at Head
Quarters, including the affair of Bulganak and battle of Alma (severely wounded, mentioned in despatches). In 1855
he served at the siege of Sebastopol, and was appointed A.Q.M. General (Medal with two Clasps, Brevets of Major
and Lt. Colonel, Sardinian,and Turkish Medals, and 5th Class of the Medjidie). Commanded the 50th Regiment
during the New Zealand wars from 1863 to 1866, including the assault and capture of Rangiawhia on 21st Feb. 1864
(mentioned in despatches) ; the repulse of the enemy's attack on the Camp at Nukumaru on 24th Jan. 1865 (men-
tioned in despatches, and CB.) . Commanded a Force of 1200 Cavalry, Artillery, and Infantry at Nukumaru and
Waitotora, moving in conjunction with the force under Sir Duncan Cameron ; also the Field Force in its advance
into ttie enemy's country, for sometime during the absence of the Brigadier General, including the action of Kaka-
ramea. Commanded the Movable Column formed for keeping open the district in 1865-66, and with that Column
onened the road to Taranaki until met by the force from that district (Medal).
~ ]12 Lt.General Rich landed in the Crimea in 1855, served in the Trenches at the siege of Sebastopol, and was
present at its fall (Medal with Clasp, Brevet of Major, and Turkish Medal) . Served during the campaign of 1858 in
Central India under Sir Hugh Rose, including the action at Koonch, and commanded the 71st Lt. Inf at the actions-
of Muttra and Despoora (mentioned in despatches) , general action of Gowlowlee, capture of Calpee, action of Morar
(mentioned), and capture of Gwalior (Medal with Clasp, and Brevet of Lt. Colonel). Commanded a Field Force of aH-
arms in the Jungles of Central India from Nov. 1858 to May 1859 in pursuit of Tantia Topee, the Rao Sahib, Feroze
Shah, and other rebel leaders, and on the 5th April surprised and totally routed the rebels at Nainwas — thanked by
the Governor General in Council.
