404ft Her Majesty's Local Indian Forces. — War Services,
1 Sir William Lockhart served with the 5th Fusiliers in Oude in December 1858 and January 1S59. Served
throughout the Bhootan campaign of 1864-66 as Adjutant 14th Bengal Lancers (Medal with Clasp). Served as Aide
de Camp to Brigadier General Merewether commanding Cavalry Brigade in the Abyssinian campaign, and was
present at Arogee and the fall of Magdala (mentioned in despatches. Medal). Served as D.A.Q.M. General
2nd Brigade with Hazara Field Force in the Black Mountain Expedition in 1868 (mentioned in despatches,
Clasp). Was present at the capture of Lambada during the Dutch war in Acheen in 1875-77 (mentioned in des-
patches, Dutch War Medal with Clasp) . Served in the Afghan war in 1879-80 as Road Commandant in the Khyber
from September to November 1879, and afterwards as Assistant Quarter Master General to Major General Roberts's
Division, and was present in the operations around Cabul in December 1879, including the investment of Sherpore
(mentioned in despatches, CB., Medal with Clasp). Served with the Burmese Expedition in 1886-87 in command
of a Brigade (received the thanks of the Government of India, mentioned in despatches, KCB., and Clasp).
Commanded the two Miranzai Expeditions in 1891 (received the thanks of the Government of India and of the
Commander in Chief in India, promoted Major General for distinguished service in the field, Clasp) ; and also
commanded the Isazai Expedition in 1892. Commanded the Waziristan Field Force in 1894-95 (received the
thanks of the Government of India for the skilful manner in which he conducted the operations to a completely

29 Sir Richard Stewart served with a party of the Mysore Silladar Horse attached to the Kurnool Movable
Column and was present at the attack on Shorapore on the 8th February 1858, on which occasion he was
dangerously wounded by two sword cuts; also commanded a detachment of the 4th Cavalry Hyderabad Contin-
gent with Brigadier Hill's Field Force in the Taptee Valley, in Berar, and in the Deccan from November 1858 till
March 1859 (Medal). Served with the Burmese Expedition in 1886-87 in command of a Brigade sent to the Ruby
Mines (received the thanks of the Governor Generalin Council, mentioned in despatches, CB., Medal with Clasp).
** Sir Robert Low served in the Sonthal campaign in 1855. Served throughout the Indian Mutiny campaign
of 1857-59 present at theactions ofBudlee-ke-Serai andNudjufghur.andsiegeandcaptureof Delhi; pursuitofthe
rebels und taking of Fort Jhnjjur; siege and capture of Lucknow; and as Brigade Major to the Agra Field Force
under Brigadier Showers in pursuit of rebels in Central India (twice mentioned in despatches, Medal with two
Clasps). Served with the Eusofzie Expedition in 1863 (Medal with Clasp). Served in the Afghan war of 1878-80,
and was present with the expedition into the Bazar Valley (mentioned in despatches) and at the assaul t of Zawa ;
accompanied-Sir Frederick Roberts in the march to Candahar as Chief Director of Transport, and was present at
the battle of Candahar (mentioned in despatches, CB., Medal with Clasp, and Bronze Decoration). Served with
the Burmese Expedition in 1885-88 in command of a Brigade (received the thanks of the Government of India,
mentioned in despatches, KCB., and Clasp). Commanded the Chitral Relief Force in 1S95. This force was
hastily mobilized to undertake the relief of the fort of Chitral, where the British Agent in Gilgit and a small force
were beleaguered by a large body of tribesmen under Umra Khan ; and, although Chitral was reached and
relieved by Lt.Colonel Kelly and his troops from Gilgit before Sir Robert Low's force could reach the place, the
relief was made practicable by the co-operation of the latter, which crossed five mountain passes, bridged two
rivers, and fought victoriously five actions with the enemy. Sir Robert received the thanks of the Government
of India, and of the Commander-in-Chief in India, was promoted to be GCB. and awarded the India Medal, 1895,
with Clasp.
* 6 Lieut. General J. May served with the Volunteer Cav airy at Lucknow, and was present at the action of Chinhut
30th June 1857, also throughout the defence of the Residency acting as a Subaltern of Artillery and subsequently
as Assistant Field Engineer. Served afterwards with the force at the Alumbagh and was present in the various
actions (wounded), and accompanied Lord Clyde's Force at the final capture of Lucknow (Medal with two Clasps,
and a year's service). Served with the Bhootan Expedition in 1864-65, and was present at the capture of Dalim-
kote and Chamoorchee (mentioned in despatches, Medal with Clasp). Served with the Burmese Expedition in
1886-87 (mentioned in despatches, Clasp).
6° Major General A. H. Prinsep was present at the mutiny of his Regiment, the 6th Bengal Light Cavalry, at
Sealkote on the 9th July 1857 and was wounded. He afterwards served against the rebels in the Gogaria
Jungles and was present at the final siege and capture of Lucknow (Medal with Clasp) . Served in the campaign
on the North-West Frontier of India in 1863 (Medal). Served in the Afghan war in 1878-79, and waspresent at the
attack and capture of Ali Musjid (mentionedin despatches, Medal with Clasp).
6" Major General J. M. C. Galloway was employed during the Indian Mutiny in Shahabad, and was engaged at
Kheree 7th October, Burhampoor 14th October, Kheree Saugor 16th October, Jugdespore 18th October, and
Seekreta and Koath Khaz 20th October 1858, and in Bundlecund during the whole of 1859 (Medal with Clasp).
Served with the Burmese Expedition in 1886 (Medal with Clasp) .
i° Major General C. A. Moore commanded a detachment of the 2nd Bombay Light Cavalry at the taking of Rewal,
present at the taking of Awah ; served with the Field Force in Central India in 1858 ; present during the operations
in the Mahee Kanta in 1858 ; and at the night attack of the Khosias at Bbyrannah and during the operations at
Nu"gur Parker; present during the operations in Kattywar, and at the taking of the Burda Hills and defeat of
the~Wagheers at that place in 1859 (Medal with Clasp) . Served with the 3rd Light Cavalry during the Abyssinian
campaign of 1867-68, and commanded the Regiment at the storming and capture of Magdala (mentioned in des-
patches. Medal).
7 5 Major General R. Morris served with the 2nd Dragoon Guards in the Indian Mutiny campaign in 1858,
and was present at the siege and capture of Lucknow and subsequent operations at Koorsee (Medal with Clasp)
