Transcript of letter from E Tradewell, 1915

Letter from Cyclist's Touring Club member E Tradewell, of Aldersyde, Dalton Brook, near Rotherham, to Bartholomew, dated 18 August 1915:

Dear Mr Westlake

Re road to York via Selby

I have now personally inspected this road, and the following is what I think of it. Rotherham to Doncaster = 'bad'. Doncaster to Askern = 'rotten'. Askern to within four miles of Selby = 'rotten'. Remainder to York = 'good', and some of it, 'very good'. York to Malton = 'fairly good'. Malton to Scarborough = 'fair'. I was going to report a bit of this road just below Bentley Church, in the narrow neck. The tramlines stood up about two inches, and the setts were anyhow, and the road itself like a quarryhole, but, the authorities must have known I had seen it as they have now started to repair same, so they have saved me the job of reporting them. The road for a good stretch was so bad that population and papers were grumbling about it.

Yours sincerely
E Tradewell
