Bartholomew and the 'Times atlas' series

The first 'Times atlas' was published in 1895. Bartholomew did not produce the maps for this edition — they were produced by the German mapmakers Velhagen and Klasing.

John Bartholomew & Son did produce the maps for the second edition, which was published in 1922. The relationship between the 'Times atlas' and Bartholomew endured — Bartholomew produced the maps for all subsequent editions.

John George Bartholomew oversaw the early stages of production of the 1922 edition. It was a mammoth task, with the first plates printed in 1916, six years before the completed work was published. John George did not live to see the work completed. This fell to his son, John (Ian) Bartholomew (1890-1962).
